Leeds 3 Tranmere 0

Tranmere suffered their second away defeat of the season against a very good Leeds side at Elland Road. First half goals from Bradley Johnson and Jermaine Beckford and a second half header from Luciano Becchio gave the home side the win, and but for some excellent saves from Luke Daniels and the intervention of the woodwork it could have been by a greater margin. John Barnes named an unchanged starting eleven from the defeat against MK Dons, but Michael Ricketts was named among the substitutes for the first time since joining the Club in place of Josh Macauley. Luke Daniels had to save with his feet from Jermaine Beckford as early as 30 seconds into the game and Leeds continued to pressure for the opening two minutes, with Aaron Cresswell and Gavin Gunning both having to clear. On four minutes a short pass from Michael Doyle put Beckford clear on the edge of the Tranmere area and the striker's left foot shot beat Daniels but cannoned off the right hand post and back into play. A minute later Rovers - wearing their new lime away strip - made their first attack of the game, with Alan Mahon's swinging long range shot forcing Leeds keeper Shane Higgs to catch underneath his bar. The former Northampton Town stopper had to drop the ball to prevent his momentum carrying it into the net and he was able to gather at the second attempt on his line. Gunning headed over a Paul McLaren corner on nine minutes after Shaleum Logan had raced up the right wing to win the set piece, while Beckford shot over from 16 yards at the other end after Robert Snodgrass worked his way past Cresswell into the Tranmere area. An overlap on the right gave Leeds the opening goal of the game. The ball was floated to the back post where Luciano Becchio headed towards goal. Daniels pulled off a fine one handed save but Bradley Johnson was first to the rebound to poke in from a tight angle. Rovers responded well, forcing Leeds back into their own half for a long spell though unable to create a shot on goal. On 25 minutes a brilliant tackle from Patrick Kisnorbo prevented Ian Thomas-Moore from getting on the end of Craig Curran's flick on ten yards out, while Goodison was unable to turn the resulting corner into the net. Beckford forced Daniels into another save on 29 minutes and the keeper had to recover quickly to beat Becchio to the rebound on the edge of his six yard box. Leeds got their second on 35 minutes. Goodison couldn't get enough on his header and the ball fell into the path of Beckford who turned his shot past Daniels and in off the right hand post. Five minutes later the injured Gunning was replaced at centre back by Ash Taylor, while Daniels pulled off another good save to prevent Johnson from netting his second of the game on 43 minutes. Thomas-Moore headed over in first half injury time and Rovers went into the break two goals down. Rovers' second change saw Ricketts replace Curran in attack for the start of the second half. On 54 minutes Beckford should have put Leeds further ahead when he was one on one with Daniels, but the striker lifted his shot onto the bar allowing Goodison to clear. Daniels tipped Kisnorbo's deflected long range effort around the post for a corner on 58 minutes and Jonathan Howson curled wide moments later. Beckford smashed a long range shot against the post on 65 minutes as the home side continued to press for a third. It needed another save from Daniels to keep out Johnson's 25 yard shot on 69 minutes and the home side hit the woodwork once more from the corner that followed, Becchio's header slamming against the post before being cleared by Shaleum Logan. Leeds substitute Neil Kilkenny dragged a 20 yard shot wide with seven minutes of normal time remaining and three minutes later the home side made it 3-0. A foul by Goodison gave Johnson a shooting chance from a free kick 30 yards out and the midfielder's effort hit the bar before Becchio headed in the rebound.
