Tranmere suffered a day to forget as four goals in the opening half hour hepled Millwall on their way to a 5-0 win at the Den.
Rovers were two down inside ten minutes as the home side started well and two further goals ended the contest.
There were improvements after half time but Rovers conceded a fifth late on after being reduced to ten men.
John Barnes named an unchanged side for the third game in a row, while former Rovers strike Jason Price was on the bench for Millwall.
The home side took the lead with their first attack of the match. A foul by Ian Goodison gave Milwall a free kick right outside the area and James Henry's shot went through the wall and beyond Luke Daniels into the Tranmere net.
Rovers responded well to win a corner moments later but they were unable to take advantage. A bad start got even worse on nine minutes when the Lions netted their second. A corner was cleared by Marlon Broomes but the ball was turned back in and flicked on to Andy Frampton who turned his shot into the net.
Henry dragged a shot wide on 16 minutes as the home side continued to have the majority of the possession.
On 23 minutes they added a third when Henry's cross was met by Steve Morison who headed the ball past Daniels.
And the fourth came five minutes later, as Henry's long range effort flew into the bottom corner.
There were more chances for the home side, but Marc Laird's shot went wide and Gary Alexander missed with a header.
Rovers' first chance came on 35 minutes when Michael Ricketts' header from a Paul McLaren free kick was saved by David Forde, while Daniels saved from Morison at the other end.
John Welsh brought a save out of Forde in second minute of the second half while Jimmy Abdou headed over for Millwall soon after. Chris Shuker sent a shot straight at Forde on 53 minutes but it lacked the power needed to test the home keeper.
Jack Smith fired an effort at Daniels from outside the area on 58 minutes and two minutes later Rovers' first change saw Alan Mahon replace Seb Carole on the left wing.
Shuker brought another save out of Forde with a shot from distance on 63 minutes while Michael Ricketts was replaced by Craig Curran in attack.
Welsh sent a header wide from a Chris Shuker corner on 69 minutes and Curran forced Forde into a save eight minutes later.
Assistant Manager Jason McAteer was sent to the stand by referee Graham Scott with just under ten minutes remaining after comments directed at the fourth official and soon afte Rovers were reduced to ten men as Broomes was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon.
From the free kick that followed Henry netted his third goal of the game and Millwall's fifth with another shot that went straight through the wall.
