A first half goal from Pawel Abbott was enough for Oldham as Tranmere suffered a 1-0 defeat at Prenton Park.
Rovers had chances to level through Ian Thomas-Moore, Chris Shuker and Marvin Sordell but they were unable to find a way past the visiting keeper.
Les Parry was forced into one change for the game with Aaron Cresswell replacing the suspended Zoumana Bakayogo, while new loan signing Marvin Sordell was named among the substitutes. Former Rovers player Jason Price started up front for the visitors.
Price registered the game's first shot on three minutes, but his effort from an angle went wide of the target while Dean Furman failed to convert a Price pass a few minutes later.
At the other end Cresswell sent a looping long range effort straight at Dean Brill after Hazell had failed to clear a cross from Craig Curran and Ian Goodison fired wide from 35 yards after intercepting Sean Gregan's clearance.
An excellent whipped cross from Cresswell went straight through the Oldham area on 17 minutes with Ian Thomas-Moore unable to react fast enough to make contact.
A 20 yard shot from Furman forced Luke Daniels into a save after it deflected off Goodison on 19 minutes and Thomas-Moore shot tamely at Brill 12 minutes later after a spell of wasted possession from both sides.
As fog began to creep near Prenton Park John Welsh did well to block a close range shot from Pawel Abbott and a minute later Goodison threw his body in the way of another shot. However from the corner that followed the visitors took the lead. The ball was drilled into the front of the six yard box from where Abbott turned it past Daniels and into the net with a glancing header.
Oldham should have been two up a minute later as a loose ball fell to Abbott ten yards out but the former Huddersfield Town striker put his shot high over the bar. It was the last chance of the half as Rovers went into the break a goal down.
By the time the second half started the fog was much thicker and beginning to have an effect on visibility from the stands.
Six minutes into the half the unmarked Whittaker forced Daniels into an acrobatic save with a powerful header from Jim Goodwin's cross.
Terry Gornell was replaced by Sordell nine minutes into the second half and the young striker soon showed some good touches on the left wing to win a corner.
Shuker forced a save out of Brill with a flick header from Sordell's left foot cross on 65 minutes and Thomas-Moore saw a shot on the turn blocked by Gregan three minutes later as Rovers looked for an equaliser.
Gareth Edds came on for John Welsh with just under twenty minutes of normal time remaining and he was joined on the pitch soon after by Charlie Barnett who replaced Curran.
Cresswell sent a free kick narrowly wide of the right hand post after Gregan had handballed outside the area and Shuker's cross was almost turned in by Thomas-Moore though the flag was quickly raised for offside.
A clever back heel from Sordell released Barnett on 89 minutes and his cross found the striker who saw two shots saved by Brill from close range before Oldham cleared.
Taylor headed at Brill from a Shuker corner in the third minute of added time, the last chance of the game for Rovers.
