Report: Tranmere 4 Exeter 0

Season tickets 2011-12 now on here for details Michael Kay and Lucas Akins scored their first goals for the Club as Rovers defeated Play-Off hopefuls Exeter City 4-0 at Prenton Park. The pair - who both found the net with unstoppable efforts - were joined on the scoresheet by Enoch Showunmi as Tranmere dominated the game. Akins grabbed his second of the match late on to complete a fine afternoon. The win lifted Les Parry's side to 53 points, nine points above 21st placed Dagenham & Redbridge and securing the Club's place in League 1 for 2011-12.  There were two changes to the team that started at Hartlepool, with Mark McChrystal missing out through injury and Zoumana Bakayogo dropping to the bench. Coming into the side were Andy Robinson and Dale Jennings, with Ash Taylor dropping into the centre of defence. A pass from Jennings almost led to an opening inside the first minute but Troy Archibald-Henville cleared off the line ahead of Enoch Showunmi. Exeter's miss hit clearance on three minutes gave the ball straight to Robinson and his lofted pas was straight in the direction of Lucas Akins at the far post but Grecians keeper Artur Krysiak jumped high over his defender to claim. Another misplaced clearance, this time from Krysiak, saw Rovers go close again on four minutes, with Robbie Weir stretching a leg out to block the ball only for it to rebound away from goal. A wonderful through ball from Weir put Jennings in space wide on the left and the youngster played it back inside to Robinson. The former Swansea player struck a first time effort from 25 yards straight through the hands of Krysiak with the ball cannoning back off the cross bar and away from goal. It was all Tranmere in the early stages, with Weir firing just over the bar from wide on the right after spotting Krysiak off his line. However, with Jamie Cureton up front for the visitors, they would always remain a threat and on 17 minutes he drilled the ball just past the left hand post after beating Ian Goodison to an aerial pass. Weir curled over the top on 22 minutes after good work from Robinson and Goodison and Jennings saw a 20-yard effort deflect away for a corner soon after. Showunmi got on the end of Cresswell's curling free kick on 34 minutes but his shot failed to hit the target and an angled drive from John Welsh hit a defender on its way to goal five minutes later. But it was the unlikely source of Michael Kay who opened the scoring. After Jennings cut inside from the left and beat two challenges, he laid the ball off for the on-loan Sunderland right back who superbly found the top left corner from 25 yards.  Rovers had to defend a couple of corners to close the half out and they did so relatively comfortably as they took their lead into the break. Weir fired over the bar from 30 yards after a misunderstanding with Jennings allowed the ball to roll loose and Showunmi saw a low effort pushed away by the goalkeeper after receiving a pass from Robinson 12 yards out. The visitors made a double change shortly after the hour mark but it was Rovers who continued to attack, with Goodison firing high and wide from an Akins long throw. The second goal came on 67 minutes. A miss hit back pass from Archibald-Henville gave Akins a difficult shooting angle but he lifted the ball perfectly over Krysiak and into an empty net from the right side of the area for his first goal for the Club. And it was 3-0 four minutes later. After good work from Jennings, the ball reached Showunmi on the left side of the area and the striker opted to shoot, drilling the ball under the body of Krysiak and into the far corner of the goal. Adam McGurk replaced the impressive Jennings with eight minutes of normal time remaining and Bakayogo came on for Showunmi, while Max Blanchard was brought on in place of Robinson soon after. And the scoring was completed moments before the game went into added time, with Akins heading past Krysiak from close range from McGurk's left wing cross.
