Tranmere 1 Peterborough 0

Tranmere picked up their first league win of the season with a well deserved 1-0 victory over Peterborough United at Prenton Park.

It was an excellent all round team performance, with Les Parry's showing the character asked for by the manager earlier in the week.

The Gaffer told the press he wanted his team to be 'horrible' to play against, and they were just that, with Rovers pressuring Peterborough at every opportunity throughout the 90 minutes, while all four defenders put in fine performances, led by the magnificent Ian Goodison.

There were three changes to the side that started against Accrington Stanley, with Ian Thomas-Moore returning from injury, Arnaud Mendy making his first start and Ian Goodison back in the centre of defence. Lucas Akins and Kayleden Brown dropped to the bench while John Welsh missed out through injury.

The starting formation against Peterborough

Rovers made a bright start with Adam McGurk forcing Joe Lewis into a good one handed save from Ryan Fraughan's cross in the first minute and the striker fired over three minutes later form Enoch Showunmi's knock down.

A shot from James Wesolowski deflected into the arms of Joe Collister on ten minutes while Max Blanchard did well to end George Boyd's mazy run a minute later.

McGurk sent a shot across the face of goal from a tight angle after getting in between Chris Whelpdale and Lewis on 17 minutes with Showunmi heading wide from the Thomas-Moore cross that followed.

Liam Darville produced a brilliant last ditch tackle to deny Aaron McLean a free shot on goal on 19 minutes after Aaron Davies had got past Aaron Cresswell, played the ball to Boyd who found his team mate in a red shirt in space on the left side of the area.

Kelvin Langmead stopped Mendy's run towards goal on 23 minutes while a cross from Fraughan had to be cut out just yards from goal by the same defender as Thomas-Moore waited at the far post to convert.

Joe Collister pulled off a great one handed save to turn Boyd's deflected shot over the bar on 36 minutes and he repeated the feat from the corner that followed, racing across his line and stretching out an arm to push Ryan Bennett's header away from goal and the score level.

Boyd chipped over the bar from 25 yards on 40 minutes and Thomas-Moore and Goodison both ended Peterborough attacks as the half reached a close.

However, there was still time for a Rovers attack. A cross field ball from Thomas-Moore saw Showunmi earn a throw in deep in the Peterborough half from which Fraughan got to the byline, cut the ball back into the six yard box from where Mendy side footed past Lewis.

Moments later the visitors almost drew level with Craig Mackail-Smith knocking the ball past Collister but the imposing figure of Goodison was on hand to smash it away from danger.

Ryan Bennett fired wide of Collister's goal at the Cowshed Stand end two minutes into the second half and a free kick from wide on the right went straight through the Rovers area without a player making contact.

Cresswell shot wide at the other end after good work from McGurk, Fraughan and Thomas-Moore on the left, while Wesolowski put a low effort past Collister's right hand post on 55 minutes.

Two excellent tackles from the impressive Mendy allowed Thomas-Moore to release Showunmi on 60 minutes but the striker saw his shot blocked ten yards out.

Moments later Thomas-Moore raced clear on the right and his cross appeared to strike the arm of a red shirted defender but penalty appeals were waved away by referee Steve Rushton.

The hardworking McGurk was replaced by Brown on 66 minutes, two minutes before Goodison volleyed just beyond the top left corner from a Fraughan corner.

It wasn't all Rovers, with Whelpdale shooting wide from outside the area and Mackail-Smith sending an overhead kick high over the bar. Mackail-Smith went closer with a free kick 25 yards out, but that effort also missed the target.

Brown shot wide from outside the area after turning his marker on 72 minutes and Collister did well to hold on to a shot from Grant McCann five minutes later at the other end.

McCann fired narrowly past the post with a low shot on 82 minutes and the substitute picked up a caution a couple of minutes later for an elbow to the face of Blanchard on the centre spot.

Tommy Rowe shot wide on 87 minutes after picking up Showunmi's headed clearance outside the area and Rovers survived a low ball from the left back which went straight through the six yard box two minutes later.

With four minutes of time added on there was opportunity for Peterborough to clinch a late leveller, but Rovers continued their strong defensive display to claim all three points.
