Report: Chesterfield 1 Tranmere 0

A second half goal from Jordan Bowery sent Rovers to a 1-0 defeat at bottom placed Chesterfield at the B2net Stadium. On a frustrating afternoon for Tranmere, the closest they came to scoring was a shot from Andy Robinson, while Owain Fon Williams made a number of high quality saves at the other end. There was one change from the side that started at Oldham a week earlier as Andy Robinson replaced Robbie Weir, coming into the side to play behind Ryan Brunt. Zoumana Bakayogo was involved for the first time since the middle of January, named on the substitutes' bench alongside Weir. David Davis sent the first shot of the game wide of Owain Fon Williams' goal while an attempt from Andy Robinson at the other end was blocked by a defender. After a cagey start to the game, a cross from Martin Devaney almost created an opening on 14 minutes but Chesterfield were able to clear the danger. A dipping volley from John Welsh went a couple of yards over Tommy Lee's crossbar on 18 minutes and six minutes later Ian Goodison had to clear from inside his own six yard box after Danny Whitaker got past Danny Holmes to cross. Jordan Bowery held off the challenge of Goodison to turn and bring a save out of Fon Williams with a shot from 16 yards on 26 minutes while Holmes did well to prevent Jack Lester gaining possession in a dangerous position inside the Rovers area soon after. Drew Talbot fired high and wide for the Spireites on 30 minutes and a counter attack for the home side five minutes later was wasted by Bowery who close to hold play up rather than shoot and his pass to a team mate went astray. It needed a superb intervention from Goodison to deny Chesterfield the opener on 39 minutes. he veteran centre back reacted quickly after Lester intercepted a short back pass from Ash Taylor, knocked the ball past Fon Williams and rolled a shot towards and empty net, arriving just in time at the near post to clear with his right foot. After Lester's low shot was easily saved by Fon Williams, Welsh wrong footed a defender at the other end before seeing his shot deflect wide of the target. On the stroke of half time Fon Williams produced a brilliant one handed to keep out Bowery's dipping 25 yard shot, sending the sides into half time level. Robbie Weir was brought on in place of Devaney at the start of the second half, while there was a stoppage in play early in the period for a head injury to Adam McGurk, though the former Aston Villa player was able to continue his involvement. Fon Williams pulled off another good save to keep out a low shot from Bowery on 51 minutes, with the Chesterfield striker putting his follow up effort wide of the target. After Enoch Showunmi had replaced Ryan Brunt in attack on 59 minutes, a well-timed block from Goodison kept Whitaker's shot away from the goalmouth. Davis shot over Fon Williams' goal from the edge of the area on 64 minutes after running on to Bowery's lay off, while at the opposite end of the pitch neither James Wallace nor Showunmi could make a good enough contact with McGurk's inswinging cross. A left foot shot from Robinson forced Lee to concede a corner on 71 minutes, with Welsh shooting wide from 25 yards soon after and Showunmi rising high above the home defence only to head high over the bar. A left foot shot from Robinson forced Lee to concede a corner on 71 minutes, with Welsh shooting wide from 25 yards soon after and Showunmi rising high above the home defence only to head high over the bar. However, on 76 minutes Chesterfield took the lead. The ball reached Bowery on the edge of the area and the striker turned and curled low past Fon Williams into the bottom left corner of the goal. Showunmi curled over the bar from 20 yards as he tried to get Rovers back in the game while former Tranmere midfielder Mark Allott missed from the edge of the area at the other end. An acrobatic volley from Goodison went wide of the target following a Robinson corner on 85 minutes and Robinson shot wide from long range soon after. Rovers threw men forward late on but they were unable to create clear opening and went home empty handed.
