A goal in each half from Joe Garner earned Preston a 1-2 win over Tranmere at Prenton Park.
Rovers were briefly level through Ash Taylor's late first half strike and hit the bar with the score at 1-1. However, Preston restored their lead soon after and left Wirral with all three points.
There was one change to the team that started at MK Dons, with Jake Kirby coming in for Jason Koumas as Rovers switched back to 4-4-2.
Though Preston had the better of the early possession, Rovers created the first chance of the game. A Matthew Kennedy cross was headed into the path of Steve Jennings just outside the area and the midfielder volleyed just a couple of yards past the left hand post.
Owain Fon Williams saved a 20 yard shot from Craig Davies that zipped off the pitch on nine minutes and punched the resulting corner clear of his area. The keeper was called into action again soon after, making a comfortable save from Keith Keane's deflected strike.
Stephen Arthurworrey and Liam Ridehalgh combined to clear a Preston attack on 14 minutes and set up a quick break down the left wing to win a corner. From the set piece James Wallace headed Kennedy's cross down to Matthew Pennington and he saw two strikes from 15 yards blocked by defenders.
On 18 minutes the visitors took the lead. Craig Davies broke free down the left and Joe Garner rose above Ridehalgh to head his cross down past Fon Williams and into the net.
Fon Williams kept out Bailey Wright's header on 23 minutes and the keeper did well to dive to his left to tip another header from Garner over the bar five minutes later.
Ronnie Moore made an early change, introducing Koumas in place of Kirby and changing the formation to 4-5-1.
Pennington raced back to block a shot from Garner after the striker ran clean through on goal on 36 minutes while Craig Davies shot wide from distance five minutes later.
Rovers equalised in first half injury time. Koumas picked up possession inside the Preston half and broke past two challenges before seeing his left foot strike tipped over the bar by Declan Rudd. The midfielder's corner was cleared but quickly played out wide to Lowe who beat his man on the touchline and rolled the ball through the six yard box from where Ash Taylor fired into the roof of the net from close range.
Tranmere started the second half brightly. On 47 minutes Wallace found Jake Cassidy whose right foot shot deflected behind the goal. Koumas took the corner from the right hand side and Taylor's goalbound header had to be punched clear by Rudd.
On 50 minutes Rovers were inches from taking the lead, with Koumas curling a 25 yard free kick against the bar.
However, soon after Preston went back ahead. Rovers lost possession inside the visitors' half and they broke quickly, with the ball being played to Garner who fired a low shot past Fon Williams and into the bottom left corner from 15 yards.
Scott Wiseman flashed an angled shot across goal and wide on 55 minutes while Fon Williams pulled off a superb one handed save to keep out an effort from Davies after the striker looked to take advantage of a slip from Arthurworrey.
After a low shot from Ridehalgh was turned behind by Rudd, Taylor fired into the side netting when Wallace flicked down a Koumas corner.
On 78 minutes Kennedy picked out the run of Lowe behind the Preston defence but the striker saw his shot saved by Rudd when one on one with the keeper.
