Tranmere were defeated 2-0 at the JD Stadium by high-flying Bury. Kelvin Etuhu and Danny Nardiello notched the two goals in the second half for the Shakers to give them all three points.
There were two changes to the Tranmere line-up which started last weekend at Carlisle. Jake Kirby and Eliot Richards were moved to the substitutes bench, replaced by Marc Laird and Kayode Odejayi. Cole Stockton was out of the squad through injury.
There were some familiar faces in the Bury side. Jim McNulty and Ryan Lowe started for the Shakers while Joe Thompson was on the bench.
The first chance of the game fell to Tranmere on three minutes. A low cross from the right was played in by Max Power and it found a sliding Marc Laird whose effort was stopped by Bury goalkeeper Shwan Jalal.
Six minutes in and Power sent over another cross from the right. This time a higher flighted delivery went to the back post but Abdulai Baggie could only head wide of the target.
Bury had a good effort on goal on 19 minutes. A crossfield pass found Tom Soares on the left wing who chested the ball nicely into his path and fired a 20 yard strike just over the crossbar.
On 24 minutes, there was almost a bizarre goal. Jalal's poor clearance hit Kayode Odejayi but the deflection went wide of the goal much to the Bury goalkeeper's relief.
Owain fon Williams was brought into action on 29 minutes when Nicky Adams hit a low left-footed shot which the Welshman saved well down to his left.
Three minutes before the break, Andrew Tutte again tested fon Williams from distance but the effort was straight at the Tranmere custodian.
Eight minutes after the break, Bury full-back Craig Jones sent over a deep cross from the right which was met by Danny Rose's header which fon Williams had to save to his right.
The scoring was opened on 55 minutes by the home side. A corner kick from the right was only half cleared and Kelvin Etuhu fired home from the edge of the penalty area with a low drive.
On 68 minutes, the Shakers went close to a second. A quick counter attack saw substitute Danny Nardiello played clear but he shot across the face of the goal and the ball went past fon Williams' far post.
With 17 minutes remaining, Tranmere made a double substitution with Matt Gill and George Donnelly being replaced by Jason Koumas and Jake Kirby.
On 80 minutes, there was almost a second for Bury. Nardiello was played in again and, after beating the offside trap, his shot from the edge of the penalty area was tipped wide by fon Williams.
Tranmere's third and final change saw Baggie replaced by Eliot Richards on 81 minutes.
Jason Koumas went close to an equaliser on 86 minutes. The midfielder laid a ball in to Odejayi who held it up back to Koumas whose curling left-footed effort was tipped around the post by Jalal.
But it was Bury who doubled their lead with three minutes left on the clock. A corner was swung in from the right and Nardiello nodded the ball into the bottom corner to secure all three points for the Shakers.
