Goals from Max Power and Danny Gardner earned Tranmere a 2-1 away win at Cambridge United on Tuesday night.
The result lifted Micky Adams' side out of the bottom two after Cheltenham drew at Portsmouth.
Adams made one change to the team that started at Northampton as Marc Laird came in for the injured Rob Taylor. With Danny Holmes missing out through injury, youth scholar Ben Jago was included on the substitutes' bench.
After Janoi Donacien cleared an early Cambridge cross, Rovers went on the attach and won two corners in quick succession, though the hosts cleared both.
Cambridge went close to opening the scoring in the tenth minute but Owain Fon Williams dived to his right to palm Dominic Ball's header away from goal after the midfielder leapt up at the back post to meet a corner.
Adam Dugdale replaced Josh Thompson on 24 minutes, with the defender still feeling the effects of a clash of heads with Robbie Simpson earlier in the game.
Fon Williams kept out a low effort from Simpson on 28 minutes and the keeper comfortably claimed a free kick from former Rovers loanee Ryan Donaldson soon after.
Kayode Odejayi headed inches wide of the right hand post from Michael Ihiekwe's right wing cross on 35 minutes while Nathaniel Mendez-Laing tested Fon Williams from outside the area at the opposite end shortly before half time.
However, there was still time for Rovers to take the lead. Myrie-Williams' cross from the left was headed away by Donaldson but the ball ran straight to Max Power who drilled a low shot past Chris Dunn from 25 yards for his 12th goal of the season. With four minutes of added time Cambridge looked for a quick equaliser and it needed the fingertips of Fon Williams to keep out Michael Nelson's powerful header from a corner.
Odejayi's through ball released Myrie-Williams eight minutes into the second half but his drilled pass through the six yard box was too powerful for his onrushing team mates and the hosts were able to clear.
Ridehalgh sent Odejayi through on goal on 58 minutes and the striker held off two defenders but saw his shot blocked on the edge of the area.
Cambridge drew level on 63 minutes with substitute Sullay Kaikai cutting inside one challenge outside the area and firing a low shot into the bottom left corner.
But Rovers were back ahead six minutes later. Donacien's long ball was flicked on by Odejayi and Myrie-Williams held off a defender and fired a cross through the area to Danny Gardner who controlled and shot low past Dunn from eight yards.
Fon Williams made sure the lead remained intact on 74 minutes when he dived high to his right to push a top corner bound strike from Tom Elliott away for a corner.
Power worked his way past two defenders before shooting into the side netting on 75 minutes while Liam Ridehalgh cleared off the line following a Cambridge corner and a downward header from Josh Coulson soon after.
Rovers were reduced to ten men on 80 minutes when Steve Jennings was shown his second yellow card of the evening and Micky Adams responded by bringing on the fresh legs of Rory Donnelly in place of Gardner.
The home side threw bodies forward in search of an equalise but Simpson was denied a spectacular overhead effort by the head of Ihiekwe just in front of goal.
Jordan Hugill replaced Myrie-Williams on 85 minutes and was called into defensive action along with the rest of his team mates as Cambridge continued to pile on the pressure.
There was momentary relief when Hugill released Donnelly down the left but the youngster's shot went wide of the near post.
The home side even sent their keeper up for a late corner but a free kick was given against Simpson as Rovers held on for a vital win.
