A 76th minute winner from Max Power sealed Tranmere's place in the 3rd round of the FA Cup as Rovers triumphed 2-1 over Oxford United at Prenton Park. Oxford had taken the lead through Alfie Potter with Kayode Odejayi equalising in the first half before Power's ninth goal of the season set up a home tie against Premier League Swansea City in round three.
Tranmere manager Micky Adams made two changes to the side which started at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday with James Rowe and Cole Stockton coming in to replace Marc Laird and Shamir Fenelon who were named on the substitute's bench.
Max Power had the first sight on goal after seven minutes. The midfielder picked up the ball just inside the Oxford half and drove forward but his effort from 30 yards failed to trouble Ryan Clarke in the visitors' goal.
Oxford's first real opportunity on goal came after 19 minutes. Good play by Danny Hylton held the ball up for Michael Collins to strike from 25 yards but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
They came closer three minutes later. A Collins corner from the left found Hylton at the back post but he could only direct his effort into the side netting, before Owain Fon Williams had to keep out a close-range effort by Johnny Mullins moments later.
On 27 minutes, Danny Holmes broke down the right and his cross was half cleared with the ball falling to James Rowe on the edge of the box whose shot was deflected wide for a corner.
Oxford opened the scoring two minutes later. Hylton's cross from the right found Alfie Potter, eight yards out, who guided a header into the bottom corner of the net past Fon Williams.
Tranmere got back on level terms on 36 minutes. Rowe played in Cole Stockton on the right edge of the penalty area and his low cross was turned home by Kayode Odejayi at the near post to send the sides in at the break tied at 1-1.
Five minutes into the second half, a deep cross from the left by Liam Ridehalgh found Odejayi who glanced a header which Clarke saved low down to his right.
Oxford's Joe Riley tried his luck from distance on the hour-mark but his shot was too high and flew over the crossbar while a couple of minutes later a cross from the right found Hylton 12 yards out but his couldn't direct his header on target.
On 65 minutes, Micky Adams made a double substitution with Rowe and Holmes being replaced by Calaum Jahraldo-Martin and Shamir Fenelon with Rovers reverting to a 4-4-2 formation, while ten minutes later, they made their third change with Marc Laird coming on for Stockton.
Seconds after the substitution, Rovers took the lead. Max Power was played in down the left-hand side and he cut inside the box and slammed home a low shot past Clarke for his ninth goal of the season.
On 81 minutes, Joe Riley hit a 30 yard free-kick just wide of Fon Williams' goal before Danny Rose hit a low shot from distance which too went wide a couple of minutes later.
Josh Ruffels hit a powerful drive on 88 minutes after a scramble in the Tranmere penalty area but Fon Williams was equal to it.
The Welsh goalkeeper made another crucial save in the final minute of additional time. Collins received the ball on the left edge of the penalty area and drilled a low shot which he saved low to his left to ensure Tranmere's progress into round three of the FA Cup to face Swansea City.
