A special delegation from Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, visited Tranmere Rovers yesterday with the aim of better understanding how a professional football club can work with the community to engage with young people.
The delegation included the city's mayor, Tri Rismaharini, and representatives from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Jakarta.
The mayor’s visit was hosted by the Liverpool City Region and Liverpool Vision, working in partnership with Wirral Council, with the aim of enhancing the relationship between the two cities.
In addition to discussions on public health, education and infrastructure, the mayor was particularly interested in the setup of a football academies and Tranmere’s involvement in the development of football in China.
After a tour of Solar Campus and brief conversation with Ben Tollitt about his physio programme, the delegation travelled to Prenton Park where Chairman Mark Palios delivered a presentation on the community aspects of the Club, as well as football development both in China and in Wirral.
Damon Shaw, the Club's Futsal Manager, was also on hand to speak about the importance of futsal at the Club and how it has developed; a popular discussion point since the sport has a massive following in Indonesia.
After exchanging gifts the delegation went on a tour of the stadium and Futsal Hub before heading back to Liverpool.
We would like to wish the Mayor and the rest of the Surabayan delegation a safe journey home and we hope they enjoyed their visit to Tranmere Rovers. We look forward to working with the Wirral Council and Liverpool City Region in helping to develop the relationship with Surabaya city.
