Tranmere Team Up With Birkenhead High School

Posted on: Mon 18 Oct 2010

Tranmere Rovers In The Community and Rover the Dog paid a special visit to Birkenhead High School as part of the '1 Goal - send my friend to school' initiative.

The Club's community team spent time with pupils increasing awareness about the number of children around the world who are currently missing out on an education. It is estimated that, worldwide, 72 million young people do not have the opportunity to learn even the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic.

The '1 Goal' initiative, is being backed by more than 8,000 schools throughout the country together with football stars such as Michael Owen and the BBC presenter, Gary Lineker. The aim is to use the massive interest in the FIFA 2010 World Cup to encourage world leaders to meet the UN promise; by 2015 all children will have access to primary education.

Around 400 girls and staff packed into the Birkenhead High School assembly with football scarves they brought for an inter-form '1Goal' scarf' competition. Each form's scarf, signed by pupils along with their family and friends, will be joined together and sent to the PM ahead of his visit to the UN Summit in September. It is hoped the scarves sent in by schools around the UK will demonstrate the overwhelming level of support for the campaign.

Kate Hughes who is a veteran of similar social legacy campaigns linked with the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and the UEFA Women's Championships in 2005 said: "the staging of the World Cup in South Africa provides a great opportunity to focus on what should be a fundamental rightfor all children throughout the world - access to education.

"I'm delighted that Birkenhead High School and Tranmere Rovers have teamed up to promote the '1 Goal' campaign. I look forward to seeing the results of the school's scarf competition and sending on the results of the pupils' work to 10 Downing Street."
