Les: "Bas Was Going To Be On The Bench"

Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

Les Parry says the postponement of Saturday's game at Brentford won't have too much of an impact on his plans for this week.

Rovers' game at Griffin Park was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, but results elsewhere meant the side maintained their 19th place in League One.

The Manager told Tranmere Player: "We went down to the ground at half eight and although we had a good idea that the game would be off, it wasn't definitive so we had to hang around the hotel. As soon as the rain came we knew it wasn't going to be on.

"Because we haven't got a midweek game it shouldn't matter too much. Because they missed the weekend game they'll work hard today and tomorrow - a really hard day today and a fairly hard day tomorrow - and then we'll just prepare on Thursday and Friday as normal.

"We couldn't have picked better results. Brighton won [against Exeter], but one of them had to get points. If either was going to win I'd have preferred Brighton to win."

One player likely to be particularly frustrated by the postponement is Bas Savage who was set to be a substitute for the first time since his Achilles injury last season.

Savage was set to replace Terry Gornell who has the mumps, while Gareth Edds would have also missed out due to concussion. However, both could feature this weekend against Southampton.

The Manager added: "Bas was going to be on the bench on Saturday so he'll be gutted. He hasn't been involved since April so with the game being off he was a bit down because we'd have tried to get him on for a few minutes. But he'll play 90 minutes hopefully at Preston North End on Wednesday and that will be his fourth full game, so he'll then be saying he's ready.

"We've got two who missed the weekend. Terry Gornell has mumps so could be available, though that's debatable. Gareth Edds would have missed Saturday but he will almost certainly be available. Ian Goodison is always going to benefit from any rest but the knock on effect from that is that we've now got another midweek game [against Brentford] so at some point he's going to have another Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday set of three games that we didn't have before."
