First half goals from Steve Jennings and Chris Greenacre earned Tranmere a 2-1 win and lifted them back into the League One Play Off places ahead of Saturday's games.

Swindon's goal came midway through the second half and made the final stages a nervy affair for Rovers, but they did enough to wrap up all three points.

Ronnie Moore named an unchanged starting line-up with Chris Shuker missing out on a place on the bench through injury. The winger was replaced among the substitutes by John Mullin.

The starting formation against Bournemouth

The sides ran out to heavy rain which was swirling around the ground and had forced most fans into the upper sections of the stands. The conditions looked set to cause difficulties throughout with both sides finding the ball sticking to the ground and passing going short.

Jon-Paul McGovern's cross just missed the heads of Billy Paynter and Simon Cox on seven minutes with Danny Coyne eventually gathering the ball and clearing the danger.

Rovers took the lead with their first real attack of the match on 12 minutes. The break forward from a Swindon corner looked like it had ended when Jennison Myrie-Williams' run was halted by a defender but the ball fell to Paul McLaren in the middle of the Swindon half. He passed to Shane Sherriff who in turn found Steve Jennings on the edge of the area. The midfielder's first touch took the ball away from his body, but he managed to beat the keeper to the ball to poke his shot into the net from eight yards out.

Moments later it was almost two, with Sherriff's volley from a McLaren cross saved by Peter Brezovan.

It needed some excellent positioning from Ben Chorley to save Rovers on 17 minutes. Ian Goodison lost the ball when trying to run it out of play for a goal kick allowing Swindon to quickly break into the area. McGovern's cross reached Anthony McNamee at the far post and his shot looked set to level the scores but Chorley jumped high to head clear on the goal line after Coyne had been beaten.

On 22 minutes Andy Taylor picked out Chris Greenacre's run into the area with a fine pass from the left but the striker's angled shot went wide at the far post.

The action quickly swung back to the Tranmere half, with Paynter forcing Coyne to save low down with a well struck shot from 25 yards out.

Myrie-Williams sent a volley along the ground to Brezovan on 33 minutes from McLaren's free kick. The pair combined again two minutes later with McLaren finding Myrie-Williams wide on the left with an exquisite cross-field pass. The winger ran at his marker before forcing Brezovan into another save with a low shot from 16 yards. The keeper gathered the ball at the second attempt under pressure from Greenacre.

Rovers' pressure led to a corner on 40 minutes and the second goal. McLaren's cross was flicked on at the near post and Greenacre volleyed in his 50th goal for the Club from an acute angle at the back post.

Myrie-Williams headed over a Sherriff cross early in the second half, while Rovers again needed a goal line clearance to deny the visitors. This time Greenacre headed clear from Hasney Aljofree's far post header.

Rovers almost grabbed a deflected third on 49 minutes when a shot from Ian Moore struck a defender and looped high in the air but Brezovan was quickly across his line to gather.

Craig Easton shot wide of Coyne's right hand post on 55 minutes and the keeper saved from Cox nine minutes later.

The visitors pulled a goal back on 68 minutes. A stray pass from Greenacre allowed the Robins to attack quickly up the right wing through Cox and the striker got past Goodison before sliding the ball to Paynter who turned in from close range.

Myrie-Williams was replaced by Calvin Zola on 72 minutes with Moore moving to the right side of midfield. The change of position allowed Moore the opportunity to drift in from deep and he did just that on 79 minutes when being played through by Jennings, but his shot was well saved by Brezovan.

On 80 minutes Zola broke ran on to a pass from Jennings, and after running past Aljofree the defender appeared to be holding on to the Rovers striker with both arms but penalty appeals were turned down and a goal kick given.

Cox sent a dipping volley narrowly wide of goal from 20 yards on 86 minutes as Swindon went in search of a late equaliser.

Rovers came close to a third when McLaren dribbled past two challenges but his shot was hit straight at Brezovan and the game stayed alive.

The home side breathed a sigh of relief on 90 minutes when Cox headed from a McNamee cross after the ball took a wicked bounce over Stockdale.

Jennings shot over late on as Rovers ran out the final few minutes for the win.
