Tranmere were eliminated from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the First Round against Morecambe in a match containing few moments of excitement.

A second half goal from Jamie Burns was enough for the visitors who also forced decent saves out of John Achterberg on a couple of occasions.

At the other end there were chances for Antony Kay, Steve Davies and Chris Greenacre but none were on target.

There were four changes to the side that started at Yeovil, with John Achterberg making his first start of the season in goal in place of Danny Coyne. Antony Kay and Adnan Ahmed were handed their first starts in Rovers shirts, while Carl Tremarco started at left back. Ian Goodison and Shane Sherriff joined Coyne on the bench, while Youth Team striker Terry Gornell was also named as a substitute for the first time.

The starting formation against Morecambe

The visitors were the first to find their way into the opposition penalty area, Matthew Blinkhorn forcing John Achterberg to push behind for a corner with a powerful angled drive.

The opening stages were a quiet affair, with little goalmouth action. Rovers' first chance came on 19 minutes, with Steve Davies heading over from Ahmed's left wing cross.

On 28 minutes Garry Hunter shot at Achterberg from 25 yards, while Davies got in front of the defender to head wide from Chris Shuker's floated cross soon after.

With the relatively slow pace continuing, there was plenty of opportunity for Kay to impress at the back with his distribution skills. The defender showed a number of decent passes, at one point picking out his former Barnsley team mate Shuker with a 50 yard cross field ball.

Davies tried what would have been a spectacular free kick on 43 minutes but his left foot shot from near the right touchline went high over Steven Drench's goal.

A minute before half time Achterberg kept Rovers level with a fingertip save from Hunter's rising shot, while Drench was forced to keep out Adam Yates' header which was directed straight at his own goal.

Mike Jones replaced Shuker at the start of the second half, but the youngster had barely been involved when Greenacre looped a shot onto the roof of the net from 18 yards from Davies' knock down.

On 52 minutes Greenacre balanced the ball on his head before finding Jennings who in turn passed to Davies. The winger took one touch to move the ball from his feet and then sent in a low shot from 16 yards which ran just wide of the near post.

Despite Rovers starting the brighter in the second half, it was the Shrimps who took the lead. Morecambe broke quickly from the back with substitute Paul Lloyd finding Jamie Burns just inside the area and he smashed a high shot past Achterberg into the left hand side of the goal.

Jennings tried for an equaliser from 25 yards on 59 minutes, but his effort curled away from goal and caused Drench no concern.

Blinkhorn dragged a shot wide from well outside the area on 62 minutes, while Craig Curran shot over from 20 yards soon after.

A misunderstanding between Achterberg and Ben Chorley almost let in Morecambe for a second but Blinkhorn lost his footing after rounding the keeper and miss hit his shot.

Ahmed almost crept in on goal on 70 minutes but Davies' pinpoint cross was turned out of his path and behind for a corner. From Jones' resulting set piece Kay headed wide.

Goodison replaced Stockdale soon after with Kay moving to right back. Goodison replaced Stockdale soon after with Kay moving to right back. The summer signing went closest to a goal yet on 78 minutes after cutting inside and firing a left foot shot narrowly past the top corner from the edge of the area.

Ahmed twisted and turned on 82 minutes before firing across goal and wide as Rovers' attempts to test Drench continued to be fruitless.

Davies tried a couple of shots from distance, but as with the first half, the visitors managed to throw bodies in the way of the goal and his efforts were sent clear of the area.

He had a dead ball chance on 88 minutes, but his curling free kick was just over the top corner, and Curran headed over from a corner a minute later.
