Tranmere's FA Cup campaign came to an end at Edgar Street with an undeserved defeat.

Rovers dominated the replay for long periods, hit the woodwork twice and had further chances to win but couldn't find a way past the Hereford keeper.

The home side scored against the run of play midway through the second half and despite more pressure late on it was enough for them to book a home tie against Cardiff City in the Fourth Round.

There were two changes to the side that lost against Bristol Rovers, with Chris Greenacre missing out through injury and Mike Jones dropping to the bench. Coming into their places were Shane Sherriff and Calvin Zola.

The starting formation against Hereford

Rovers registered the game's first shot inside sixty seconds. Jennison Myrie-Williams cut inside his marker on the right and squared the ball back to Gareth Taylor but his first time effort went wide of goal.

Zola tried a speculative effort from 30 yards out four minutes later after turning past two defenders but his shot went well over Wayne Brown's goal.

Rovers came agonisingly close to opening the scoring on nine minutes, Myrie-Williams again cutting in from the right before firing in a shot which struck the top of the bar before going over the top.

A left foot shot from Gareth Taylor from the area deflected wide on 23 minutes, though confusion briefly took over the press box when local radio announced a penalty had been awarded. Unfortunately, it wasn't true, and Rovers were unable to take advantage of the set piece that followed. When the ball eventually fell loose, Theo Robinson broke clear for Hereford but under pressure from Ben Chorley and Sherriff he put his shot over the bar from 18 yards.

Myrie-Williams, who along with Zola had looked the visitors' biggest threat early on, put a curling effort wide on 25 minutes.

Zola was narrowly beaten to a close challenge by Brown on 31 minutes and the striker needed treatment after both went in legs first.

Rovers were on top in the cup tie but needed a goal to show for their dominance. The home side, though, remained a threat, with the pace of Robinson always a danger. On 36 minutes Danny Coyne had to race out of his area to prevent the striker a clear shot on goal after he ran on to a ball over the defence.

Myrie-Williams forced Brown into a low save with a left foot drive from the edge of the area on 42 minutes, the last chance of the half.

Coyne excellently saved from Robinson's close range header on 50 minutes to keep the score level, while Brown kept out a powerful effort from Myrie-Williams four minutes later.

Steve Jennings sent a shot straight at Brown from 20 yards out, while a McLaren cross had to be turned out of the path of Gareth Taylor by a defender soon after. The striker headed narrowly wide from the corner that followed, with McLaren again the provider from wide on the left.

On 60 minutes Rovers came close again. This time Andy Taylor crossed from the left with Gareth Taylor knocking down and Zola shooting just past the post while on the floor.

A good ball from Jennings put Zola clear on the right on 63 minutes but McLaren blazed his shot high over the bar from the striker's cut back.

Zola missed a great chance on 67 minutes when heading Jennings' cross into the ground and over the bar and the tall striker smashed another shot into the bar two minutes later after holding off three challenges inside the area.

The shots seemed to be coming in every few minutes as Tranmere kept pressing for the opening goal - Gareth Taylor and Myrie-Williams both shooting over from the edge of the area.

However, just like the first tie at Prenton Park, Hereford took the lead against the run of play. It had been all Tranmere in the second half, but Simon Johnson broke free of the defence on 72 minutes and placed a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal from the edge of the area.

Rovers needed a response, and Zola shot wide from McLaren's pass with the very next attack.

Craig Curran replaced Sherriff with 15 minutes remaining, while Kay sent a shot wide from 30 yards out soon after.

Benjamin hit the post with a glancing header for Hereford on 79 minutes, while the hard working Jennings was replaced by John Mullin three minutes later.

Brown saved well from Zola's low shot on 83 minutes to keep his side in the lead.

A late corner saw Coyne in the Hereford area but McLaren's cross fell short and the home side held on for the win.
