Tranmere came from behind to earn their first away win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Huddersfield Town.

Rovers were perhaps fortunate to go into half time level thanks to Edrissa Sonko's brilliantly taken goal, but they were much improved in the second half and worked hard to defend the lead earned by on-loan defender Ryan Shotton.

There were three changes to the side that lost at home to Oldham. Ian Goodison returned from international duty to take his place at centre back, with Ryan Shotton moved to right back instead of the injured Gareth Edds. Chris Shuker and Craig Curran dropped to the bench with Ian Moore and Chris Greenacre starting.

The starting formation against Huddersfield

Huddersfield's Ian Craney registered the first shot of the game in the second minute, but his right foot effort was sliced well wide of goal. Michael Flynn came closer a minute later with a low shot from the edge of the area, but again the ball went past Danny Coyne's right hand post.

Antony Kay had Rovers' first attempt on goal on 11 minutes after he reacted fasted to a lack of communication among the home defence, but his half volley went high over Matt Glennon's bar.

Edrissa Sonko headed wide two minutes later from a Greenacre cross and Ben Chorley produced a carbon copy effort soon after from Andy Taylor's corner.

But the next attack came at the wrong end for Rovers, with a free kick harshly being awarded for a foul by Taylor on 17 minutes and Liam Dickinson sending his shot around the wall and in at the bottom right corner to give Huddersfield the lead.

Dickinson almost doubled the lead two minutes later, flicking a header just past the far post from Gary Roberts' cross before the start of a spell that saw both sides continually waste possession from promising positions.

On 37 minutes Chorley threw his body in the way of a goalbound effort from Keigan Parker with Andy Taylor clearing Dickinson's follow up from the goal line. From the corner that resulted, Nathan Clarke powered a header towards the net but Coyne produced a fine save to push the ball on to the bar and behind.

The save seemed more important moments later. A high ball from Goodison was chested down by Greenacre into the path of Sonko who volleyed into the bottom left corner from 20 yards for his second goal for the Club.

Huddersfield had the ball in the net on 43 minutes but Dickinson's effort was ruled out with the assistant referee waving his flag for offside several seconds earlier.

The start of the second half brought an early free kick for Rovers with Kay heading wide from eight yards out. On 49 minutes another free kick came for a foul on Taylor and the left back crossed the ball himself with Shotton rising unmarked to power in a header from six yards and give Rovers the lead.

The goal brought a double change for the home side with Robbie Williams and Danny Cadamarteri brought on in place of David Unsworth and Ian Craney. However, before either could make an impact it was almost 3-1 to Tranmere when Kay ran on to a Greenacre pass and knocked the ball past a defender only for Glennon to gather at his feet before he could shoot.

Shotton broke free on the right on 57 minutes and slid the ball through to Greenacre who was one on one but the striker's shot hit the post and went behind for a goal kick.

Chorley narrowly missed out on a third on 62 minutes, sending a header across goal and wide at the far post from a Taylor corner.

The home side responded with a flurry of attacks, but a combination of defending and poor final balls meant Coyne was relatively untested.

Roberts shot wide from a tight angle on 74 minutes for Stan Ternant's Huddersfield and Shotton and Goodison combined to keep out a Cadamarteri shot a minute later.

Greenacre, who had worked tirelessly throughout, was replaced by Curran with ten minutes remaining, shortly before a Kay volleyed was headed clear by Michael Collins.

Rovers thought they'd clinched the win on 85 minutes when Moore's cross was turned in by Jennings, but, like in the Oldham game, the effort was ruled out for offside.

Seconds later it should have been 2-2 but Flynn headed Cadamarteri's cross wide from just six yards out.

Despite an anxious final few minutes, Rovers did enough for the win and their first away points of the campaign.
