Tranmere defender Danny Holmes has been described as a 'real competitor' by Southport Manager Peter Davenport.

The 19-year old right back is currently on loan at the Blue Square North side and has impressed during his time at Haig Avenue.

Davenport told the Liverpool Echo: "Danny has done tremendously well for us.

"For a teenager to do what he's done - come into a physical league like this and more than hold his own - is terrific.

"He's a real competitor and you can tell Tranmere have brought him up in the right way.

"We just hope he can go back and get himself a new contract at Tranmere and force his way into their first team."
