Rovers' UEFA Cup Final Connections
At Wednesday night's UEFA Cup Final between Zenit St Petersburg and Rangers no fewer than six players took part who had previously played at Prenton Park.
Tranmere's ground doesn't seem to have given the players any luck, however, as all ended up with runners-up medals as Rangers were beaten 2-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium.
In goal for Walter Smith's side was Neil Alexander, who played for Cardiff City at Prenton Park in April 2002, with the Welsh side winning 1-0.
Central defence partnership David Weir and Carlos Cuellar played for Everton (managed at the time by Walter Smith) and Osasuna in pre-season friendlies in 2001 and 2004 respectively, while late substitute Lee McCulloch was twice on the winning side for Wigan Athletic as they defeated Tranmere in 2001 and 2002 in League One.
Rangers captain Barry Ferguson made his European debut for Rangers when they played Shelbourne at Prenton Park in a UEFA Cup qualifier which was moved from Dublin for safety reasons and Christian Dailly, an unused substitute on Wednesday, scored against Rovers but still ended up on the losing side as Tranmere beat Blackburn 2-1 in 2000.
However, Zenit St Petersburg manager Dick Advocaat seemed to have a touch of Prenton Park magic, having been in charge of the Rangers side that defeated Shelbourne in '98.
