'Lion-Hearted' Goodison Involved In Jamaica Defeat
Tranmere defender Ian Goodison put on an excellent display of defending but it wasn't enough to stop Jamaica going down to a 3-0 defeat against Mexico last night.
The World Cup qualifier, which was played in front of a crowd of around 100,000 at the Azteca, started disastrously for Jamaica, as Deportivo La Coruna's Andres Guardado curled in a free kick after just three minutes.
Goodison denied Spurs striker Giovanni Dos Santos a one on one chance with an excellent slide tackle on ten minutes, but ten minutes later, Fernando Arce knocked in a rebound after Arsenal striker Carlos Vela's shot was saved by Donovan Ricketts.
The home side's third goal came on 62 minutes when Johny Magallon converted Guardado's corner.
Despite the loss, Goodison was in fine form throughout the games, with the Jamaica Observer commenting: 'there was only going to be one winner on the night, despite the heroics of Ricketts and the lion-hearted central defender Ian 'Pepe' Goodison, who defied his 35 years and 10 months.'
Jamaica now travel to San Pedro Sula, Honduras for their next group match on Wednesday night.
They lie bottom of the four team group, but a win over Honduras could lift them as high as second.
