Les: "The Lads Defended Magnificently"

Posted on: Sat 06 Mar 2010

Les Parry was delighted with his side's performance as they ran out 2-1 winners over Southampton at Prenton Park, with Marlon Broomes and Ian Thomas-Moore on target.

The Manager told Tranmere Player: "I thought we were slightly hard done to at their place so I was really hoping we'd win today and that put a bit of an edge on it for me.

"We started really well, scored the goal and had another couple of chances and had them on the rack. We told the lads before the game not to be giving free kicks or corners away around the box and then Zoom headed one for a corner when he could have put it for a throw. But we were a bit hard done by before that not to be given a free kick.

"But in the first time the only way they were going to hurt us was from set pieces and we defended magnificently.

"Marlon scored a good goal and everyone could see it's right from the training ground. It's round the back, head back in across and put in - we couldn't have done it any better. Apart from his goal I thought Marlon defended magnificently."

Parry felt there were one or two decisions that could have gone the other way during the course of the afternoon.

He added: "To be fair to Southampton I think [the referee] got big decisions wrong for both sides. I thought we should have had a penalty when Marlon's headed it and it hit their lad with his hands above his head. And I'd have given the push by Luke O'Neill on their lad, I thought it was a clear penalty, but no more clear a penalty than the one we weren't given."
