Tranmere Reserves went down 1-0 at Huddersfield in their first Pontin's Holidays League Cup group match of the season.
Shaun Garnett took charge of a strong eleven, with John Achterberg, Antony Kay, Carl Tremarco, Adnan Ahmed, John Mullin and Gareth Taylor all starting.
Taylor came closest in the first half as the sides went into the break level. However, less than a minute into the second period, the home side took the lead when Rovers failed to clear a cross and Luke Malcher knocked in.
Mullin hit both posts on 56 minutes while Danny Holmes and Craig Curran came close. In the final minute Taylor had the ball in the net but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Garnett said: "We had plenty of chances but just couldn't put the ball in the net. Mulls, Gareth Taylor, Craig Curran and Mike Jones all had chances in the second half.
"Paul Henry and Antony Kay did well at the back and it was pleasing that Adnan Ahmed and John Mullin got 90 minutes under their belts."
Tranmere: Achterberg, Henry, Ash Taylor, Kay, Tremarco (Holmes 60), Jones, Ahmed, Mullin, Wilkie (Beahon 70), Curran, Gareth Taylor. Substitutes not used: McWeeney, Blundell, Gornell.
