Tranmere claimed a 2-1 win over Chester City in the Pontin's Holidays League Cup at Prenton Park on Wednesday night.

After Craig Curran had headed wide from a Mike Jones cross and had another effort hit the side netting, Rovers took the lead through Ash Taylor. The centre back went forward for a free kick on the right on 11 minutes and volleyed in Aaron Cresswell's inswinging cross at the far post.

Six minutes later the lead was doubled, with Curran breaking past his marker on the edge of the area and shooting low past Phil Palethorpe into the left corner of the net.

Early in the second half Palethorpe produced a fine save to keep out Jones' free kick, and though the visitors pulled a goal back on 85 minutes when Kevin Sandworth's free kick crept under the body of Shane McWeeney, Rovers did enough for the win.
