Terry Gornell scored a second half hat-trick as Rovers came from 3-0 down to rescue a point from their Central League West Division match against Burnley at Prenton Park.

Shaun Garnett's young side were a goal down after just five minutes when the visitors scored a bizarre effort which deflected past John Achterberg.

On 20 minutes the Clarets doubled their lead through Jay Rodriguez when he headed in a free kick from former Tranmere midfielder Alan Mahon. The Republic of Ireland international was one of several high profile players onshow for the visitors, who had Peruvian international Diego Penny in goal, Hungarian international Gabor Kiraly on the bench and Remco van der Schaaf, a Champions League semi finalist with PSV Eindhoven in midfield.

After 50 minutes it looked all over for Tranmere when Achterberg conceded a penalty and Rodriguez fired into the roof of the net.

However, a minute later things started to turn for Rovers. Dave Wilson went close to levelling when his low shot beat the keeper but was cleared off the line, and on 65 minutes Rovers were awarded their own penalty, with Gornell sending the keeper the wrong way to pull a goal back.

The second goal came just three minutes later with Gornell sliding the ball into the net after Ash Taylor's shot had been saved.

Josh Macauley twice went close to equalising on 85 minutes, and just as it seemed Rovers would run out of time, Ryan Fraughan was brought down inside the area for Tranmere's second penalty.

This time Gornell shot straight down the middle to score his first hat-trick at Reserve level and secure a draw for his side.
