Reserve Coach John McMahon

Adam Dickinson and Steve Davies were on target for Tranmere Reserves as they claimed a 2-1 win over Burnley at Rivacre Park.

Burnley, who included former Tranmere player Graham Branch in attack and Frank Sinclair in defence, had twice gone close to scoring by the time Rovers took the lead in the sixth minute. Paul Brown raced on to a long pass and played a neat flick into the area for Davies. Though his shot was parried by the Burnley keeper, Dickinson was first to the ball to stroke home from 12 yards.

Gareth O'Connor drilled a free kick wide for Burnley on 15 minutes and Joe Fowler did well to block Nicholas Platt's powerful drive on 26 minutes, while Dickinson brought a save out of Mark Crossley at the other end.

Rovers' young midfield quarter of Brown, Fowler, Mike Jones and Craig Curran worked hard throughout and looked comfortable against their more experienced opponents. However, it was striker Davies who started his side's next move on 42 minutes, dispossessing Sinclair outside the area before whipping in a low cross. The ball missed Dickinson but was collected the other side of the pitch by Brown. He sent in another cross which saw Fowler shoot wide from around 20 yards.

Fowler's next attempt went wide on the stroke of half time after Davies' 25 yard free kick had been blocked by the wall.

Davies shot wide on 52 minutes, while Adam Kay fired over from 20 yards for the visitors soon after.

Burnley's next effort was more accurate and drew them level on 57 minutes. While Gary Lovell was down injured, a ball from the right found Branch inside the area and the striker found the far corner of the net beyond Phil Palethorpe.

Palethorpe did well to deny Marc Pugh a chance on goal on 66 minutes, but the Rovers keeper had little to do for the rest of the game.

With the pace of Rovers the most likely source of a second goal, it was a break from Joe Fowler that brought the equaliser on 74 minutes. After a penalty was awarded for a tug on the midfielder as he raced into the area, Davies fired high into the middle of the net to put John McMahon's side back ahead.

Two minutes it was nearly 3-1 when Davies smashed a shot against the post from 10 yards after Burnley failed to clear.

Henry brought a save out of Crossley with a header from Brown's free kick with 11 minutes remaining as Rovers ran out winners in the Pontin's Holidays League match.
