Paul McLaren says Rovers will be going to Yeovil on Saturday aiming for maximum points.
The midfielder, who rejoined Tranmere after a season at Bradford City, is looking forward to a return to competitive action.
He told www.tranmererovers.co.uk: "I can't wait to get started. The friendlies are out of the way and while it's good to get the games under you're belt, they're not as meaningful as competitive games.
"You always want to win your first game and Yeovil away will be a tough one. We'll definitely be going there for all three points.
"It's a long trip but I'd rather get it out of the way in the summer than go there in midweek in the winter."
McLaren, who is enjoying his new midfield partnership with John Welsh, says he expects some familiar faces to be around the top of the division this season.
He added: "The Gaffer is asking the two central midfield players to sit there and not go forward, so me and Welshy are doing that and it suits me. The two wide men come off the flanks and let the full backs bomb on.
"Leeds will be up there, Huddersfield have spent money and MK Dons will probably be up there again. There's always a couple of surprise packages as well, and hopefully we can get ourselves up there."
