Yates: I’d Have Loved To Have Been There

Posted on: Sat 29 Jan 2011

Former Rovers defender Steve Yates admits he'd have loved to have been able to attend the Club's 125 year celebrations at Saturday's game against Swindon Town.

More than 40 former players are expected to take part in a parade on the pitch at 2.30pm (details here), and Yates contacted the Club with a special message ahead of the big day.

Yates, who now lives in Crete and scored 14 goals in 137 appearances for the Club from 1999-2002, exclusively told www.tranmererovers.co.uk: "I've read about the 125 year celebrations on the internet and it would have been really nice to have been able to attend and see some of the old players.

"I've got some great memories from my time at Tranmere. It was a good time for the Club, with the FA Cup quarter finals and getting to Wembley in the Worthington Cup. And for me scoring two goals against Everton is a huge memory. It was a great day for us and a great day for the supporters I'm sure.

"I had some really good days in my playing career but scoring those two goals against local rivals in a cup competition would have to be up there.

"The fans were brilliant to me. I think they appreciated my hard work. I always went out to do my best and I think they saw that. I had a fantastic relationship with them, it was a great area to play football in and Tranmere is still very close to my heart.

"I hope everybody enjoys the day."

To mark the occasion, the Club has reduced admission to just £12.50 for Adults and only £1.25 for Juniors in the Main Stand, Paddocks, Johnny King Stand and Kop Stand. Supporters are advised to arrive early for the game to avoid missing the parade at 2.30pm.
