Les' programme notes (sponsored by Total Fitness) against OLdham Athletic:
I'm writing this on Tuesday having just walked passed our pitch on my way to my office. We definitely need a few dry days as I'm sure this match wouldn't have been played if was on Tuesday evening. Mind you, I suppose it must be on because you are reading this.
As I write this I am unsure of Wednesday reserve match against Wrexham is going ahead. At the moment the signs are not good but I've got my fingers crossed as we desperately need the game. The lads need to improve their match fitness and Bas needs to step up his rehabilitation. We arranged a reserve team friendly against Shrewsbury last week and Bas was able to get 90 minutes under his belt. I'd said to Paul Simpson before the match that we needed somebody to go through Bas as our lads tend to stay away from him frightened of hurting him. Sure enough, 10 mins into the game and their number 5 goes right through the back of Bas leaving stud marks down the outside of his ankle. Luckily, Bas was able to get through the match but then missed 3 days training as we waited for the swelling on his ankle to go down. It was lucky for Bas, and a massive coincidence, that the swelling was still too bad for him to train on Friday but had settled down sufficiently for him to able to strut his stuff around the studio of Soccer AM on Saturday morning! Maybe I should have asked him to dance around the training ground on Friday? He was brilliant on Soccer AM, if you missed him look it up on Youtube. The only thing I would like to point out is that the horrible tracksuit he had on, with the crutch about 2 inches off the floor making his legs look short and stumpy, is a southern thing and does not reflect the obviously more up to date fashion trends this side of Knutsford services. It won't be long now until Bas is pushing for a place in the first team squad, as long as we can get some reserve team matches played.
The only other injured player at the moment is Kithson Bain who turned his ankle in training a couple of weeks ago. I think it was his ankle, I don't understand a word he says and it's supposed to be English he speaks. I don't like to upset him because he frightens me. When you can understand what he says, all he talks about is killing sharks and big fish or hunting for deer with a big gun. His eyes light up when he gets onto the colour of the blood of a marlin with it's head caved in running down his arms and sharing a meal of shark's heart with his mates when it is still beating. This week, Kithson was named as Granada player of the year. He was made up, especially when he found out the trophy is a big silver number. I just hope he invites me to the award ceremony, especially if Gerald Sinstadt is going to present him with it for Granada. Kithson started training again on Monday, much to the dismay of Craig Curran. Kithson 'accidentally' back heeled Craig in the shin and Craig screamed, turned around and said "oh deary me Kithson, you seem to have kicked my shin", I think that's what he said. Anyway, Kithson just looked at him with those mass-murderer eyes and sort of snorted which made Craig back off a bit and offer his other shin for Kithson to kick. With a bit of luck, Kithson should play against Wrexham reserves on Wednesday and then be looking at the first team squad again.
Just a quick note to bring you up to date with the physio position. I've had trouble getting a physio with football experience who will jack in a job to join us until the beginning of May then possibly be slapped off. I've been fortunate in having an extra pair of hands from ex-league referee George Cain, who is completing a sports rehabilitation course at Salford Uni, in fact I couldn't have managed without him. It now looks as if I'm going to have to settle for a Monday to Friday physio and carry on doing the matches myself which I didn't want to do but needs must. With a bit of luck I'll have this sorted by the time you read this. Enjoy the match.
