Tranmere Under-18s progressed to the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup with a hard fought win over Cambridge United at Prenton Park.
A tight first half came to life on 40 minutes when Joe Collister tipped a Cambridge shot on to the bar and a minute later the save looked even more significant as Tom Baker found the bottom corner to give Rovers the lead.
Jay Ashcroft cleared off the Tranmere line on 52 minutes and three minutes later Rovers doubled their advantage as Baker headed in from Jack Mackreth's cross following a well worked corner.
Jack Bailey pulled a goal back for Cambridge on 63 minutes with a fine strike from 25 yards, and the visitors were unlucky not to level five minutes later when another long distance shot cannoned off Collister's bar.
However, Rovers secured the win a minute from time when Max Power finished off his dribble into the area with a shot into the bottom right corner from 15 yards.
Rovers will now host Ipswich Town in the Third Round.
