Home Tie The Incentive For Rovers' Youngsters

Posted on: Thu 12 Jan 2006
The FA Youth Cup

If Tranmere's Youth team defeat Crystal Palace next Monday (January 16th) they will play at home for the first time in the competition.

Rovers or Palace have been drawn at home to Millwall or Watford in the Fifth Round, with the winner of that tie making the Quarter Finals.

Shaun Garnett's side have yet to concede a goal in the competition having beaten both Chesterfield and Blackpool 3-0, and Wycombe Wanderers 5-0.

For all but two of the current eligible squad, a place in the Fifth Round would be the chance to play in the Youth Cup at Prenton Park in front of friends and family for the first time.

Gary Lovell appeared in all three Youth Cup ties at home in the 2003-04 season (v Stevenage, Southampton and Middlesbrough) and Paul Henry came on as substitute against Southampton. Jamie Garry and Michael Johnston were unused substitutes in the competition.

The full Fifth Round draw is as follows (matches must be played by Saturday, 4 February):

Brentford or Waltham Forest v Sheffield Wednesday or Newcastle United
Burnley or Fulham v Liverpool or Ipswich Town
Carlisle United or Huddersfield Town v Sheffield United or Wigan Athletic
Crystal Palace or Tranmere Rovers v Millwall or Watford
Blackburn Rovers or Derby County v Brighton & Hove Albion or Chelsea
Nottingham Forest or Reading v Manchester City
Bolton Wanderers or Crewe Alexandra v Southampton or Aston Villa
Sunderland or Manchester United v Wolverhampton Wanderers or Charlton Athletic
