Match Preview: Yeovil Town

Setting the scene…

Tranmere Rovers will aim to make it four Sky Bet League Two wins in a row away at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

Harvey Gilmour netted the decisive goal in the second half as Micky Mellon’s Rovers beat Macclesfield Town 1-0 under the Prenton Park floodlights last Friday night, a result which sees them in fifth heading into the fixture at Huish Park.

Having played 12 games so far this term, Darren Way’s Glovers find themselves 15^th in the fourth-tier.

Their match away at Cheltenham Town scheduled for last Saturday was postponed due to international call-ups.

The Glovers season so far

Yeovil Town are seven points behind Rovers ahead of kick-off on Saturday and will be hoping for three points to close the gap on the teams in the top half of the division.

They began the season in strong fashion, collecting eight points in August, and they will be hoping to regain that form, starting this weekend.

The highlight of the season so far is the 6-0 victory at Newport County, with the Exiles currently occupying one of the automatic promotion places.

One to watch

Alex Fisher, Yeovil’s top scorer this term, will be the man that the Rovers defence will need to be wary of.

The Londoner began his career with Oxford United after coming through the youth system at the club, spending loan spells at non-league Brackley Town and Oxford City, where he scored 12 goals in 16 games, in his early professional years.

Fisher then joined Glenn Hoddle’s Academy in Spain, and from there, earned a deal with local side Jerez Industrial, netting 11 goals in the 2010/11 season.

After one season in Spain, he then turned out for three Belgian clubs, initially Tienen, before agreeing further moves to Mechelen and Heist.

A brief stint in Italy at Monza followed prior to Fisher returning to the UK, plying his trade at Mansfield Town, Torquay United, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Motherwell.

The referee

Staffordshire-based Christopher Sarginson will take charge of Tranmere Rovers’ Sky Bet League Two encounter down at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

Sarginson is taking charge of Tranmere for the first time this season, and so far, this term he has brandished 24 yellow cards and no red ones from his 10 matches.

Marvyn Amphlett and Samuel Ogles will run the line while Michael Webb is the fourth official.

We have been allocated 640 tickets with 300 in the Radio Cabs Stand (Terrace) and 340 in the Screwfix Community Stand (Seated).

Pay on the gate is available but with an increase in price. There will be a £3 increase in the seated section and a £2 increase for the terrace section.

Tickets will go off sale at 4pm on Friday 19th October.

Match Report: Yeovil Town 0-0 Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere stretched their unbeaten run to five games in Sky Bet League Two after a stalemate against Yeovil Town.

Micky Mellon was forced into one change before the game with Adam Buxton missing out due to a back problem, resulting in Ritchie Sutton’s return to league action for the first time in nine weeks with Manny Monthe moving to left back.

Rovers started the game brightly, Connor Jennings playing a neat one two with Ollie Banks but could only drag his volley wide of the mark.

Yeovil’s first opportunity came on eight minutes. The long throw of Dickenson was flicked on by Fisher, forcing Davies to take no chances and tip the ball over his bar.

It was a game of little chances with Tranmere’s next chance coming on the half an hour mark. Jonny Smith with a jinxing run down the left wing, cut back to Gilmour who crossed towards the head of Banks, however, he couldn’t quite get the required connection to trouble the Yeovil goalkeeper.

The second half was a similar story to the first half. This time it was Yeovil who came out of the traps the quickest with Monthe doing very well to deal with an in swinging cross at the back post.

Then on 56 minutes, Olomola had a clear sight of goal on the edge of the area but could only find the terracing behind Davies’ goal.

Rovers’ first chance of the second half came shortly after. Jonny Smith running at his full back and crossing with his right foot to Norwood who couldn’t divert his on volley on target from a difficult angle.

On 70 minutes, Yeovil had their best chance of the game. A pinpoint cross from the right fell to Arquin inside the six yard box but his swing completely missed with the ball going out for a goal kick.

The next chance would come right in the dying minutes of the game. James Norwood found space just inside the box with only the keeper to beat but he could only find the grateful arms of Baxter with the referee blowing the final whistle just moments after.

Rovers took a well-earned point in Somerset with another long trip to Forest Green on Tuesday night look to continue their current form.
