Match Report: Carlisle United 0-2 Tranmere Rovers

15 September 2018

Tranmere Rovers recorded their first away win back in the EFL with a 2-0 victory at Carlisle United.

An own goal from United defender Tom Parkes and a first league goal in Rovers colours for Paul Mullin sealed the win for the visitors, in a game which all the drama came in the final 15 minutes.

The momentum swung in Tranmere’s favour when Scott Davies saved Devitt’s penalty with just over 15 minutes remaining. And just over ten minutes later, Rovers led by two goals to nil in a game the travelling support, who were loud and proud throughout, will not forget for a long time!

Manager Micky Mellon made one change for the trip to Cumbria, Dylan Mottley-Henry came in for his first league start of the campaign, replacing fellow winger Jonny Smith who dropped to the substitutes bench.

Tranmere, donning their third strip, made a bright start in their first visit to BruntonPark for nearly four years.

In form striker, James Norwood, had the game’s first opportunity with six minutes on the clock, drilling a low effort from 25-yards out, which whistled just past the post.

Two minutes later, Ollie Banks tried his luck from a similar area which was only a couple of inches away from the goalkeeper’s top right hand corner.

When in possession, Carlisle were confident, and just before the quarter hour mark, they grazed Scott Davies’ cross bar courtesy of a back post header from Richie Bennett, a real warning sign for Rovers.

Mellon’s men were not scared to have an effort from distance, and former Carlisle man Cole Stockton nearly punished his former employers, seconds after Bennett’s header at the other end, but his 25-yard strike was tipped over by his former team mate Adam Collin.

After a frantic opening 20 minutes, the game settled down as both teams looked for a way through. Ten minutes before the half-time whistle, Rovers had a scare when Bennett once again slipped away from his marker to be left in acres of space at the back post, but his header was off target.

The hosts were putting on the pressure before the interval and Devitt was a fraction away from scoring a goal to remember, cutting in from the right flank, United’s number 10 curled an ambitious effort over Davies’ goal.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half was a tight affair with United having the first meaningful shot on the hour mark, as former Morecambe man Devitt unleashed a powerful drive from the edge of the ‘D’ which was narrowly off the mark.

With just under 25 minutes to go, Mellon made his first change as Stockton was replaced by fellow striker Mullin to partner August’s Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month, Norwood.

And the striker nearly got in on the action straight away, when a long ball upfield was directed towards the striker but he just couldn’t keep the ball in play.

Six minutes later, BristolCity loanee Smith came into the fray for Mottley-Henry and the double change lightened Rovers up in the final third.

However, in the 73rd minute, Carlisle were awarded a penalty as Gary Liddle went down under a challenge from Scott Davies. Devitt stepped up for the hosts, but his penalty was superbly saved by Rovers’ number one to keep to score 0-0.

Davies’ save really gave the visitors a boost and Mellon’s men turned the game completely on its head in the 80th minute as they took the lead courtesy of an own goal from United defender Parkes.

United’s number six tried to clear an absolute wonderful cross from Caprice on the right hand side, but his clearance found a way past Collin to send the near 800 from the Wirral into celebration.

And the celebrations carried on six minutes later when Rovers doubled their lead and a moment striker Mullin will not forget.

Tranmere’s number nine curled an unstoppable effort from the left hand side of the penalty box which looped over the outstretched arm of Collin.

The former Swindon striker nearly made it three for the visitors when he hit the bar with a close range shot after a tantalising run from Smith. Both Norwood and Mullin tried to turn the home in after the ball rebounded back into the penalty box, but the latter struck over.

The perfect away performance from Rovers as they took their first three points away from home back in the EFL.

Rovers: Davies, McNulty, Monthe, Norwood, Jennings, McCullough, Caprice, Mottley-Henry (Smith 71), Stockton (Mullin 65), Bakayogo, Banks. Unused subs: George, Buxton, Ellis, Cole, Gilmour

Attendance: 5187 (796 away)
