Match Reports

Leyton Orient 4-0 Tranmere Rovers

4 December 2021

Tranmere Rovers’ time in the Emirates FA Cup came to an end in the capital, after a 4-0 loss to Leyton Orient.

Harry Smith netted twice for Kenny Jackett’s side, with Aaron Drinan and Omar Beckles also getting on the scoresheet.

A tough afternoon for Rovers, whose FA Cup adventure comes to end in Round Two.

Micky Mellon made one change to the side that played in the last fixture against Bradford City a couple of weeks ago.

At The Breyer Group Stadium, Orient opened the scoring just after the 20-minute mark. Hector Kyprianou found Smith, who finished beyond Ross Doohan.

Just over 10 minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead. Rovers failed to clear their lines from a corner, and Beckles found the back of the net after a cut-back from Drinan.

Mellon made two changes at the break, hoping to change the tide of the game. Ryan Watson and Sam Foley came on for Josh Hawkes and Jay Spearing.

After a quiet opening to the second half, Mellon called to more substitutes to impact the game. Callum McManaman and Mani Dieseruvwe were introduced, taking the places of Callum MacDonald and Nicky Maynard.

Leyton Orient added a third just before the hour mark. A Drinan cross hit the arm of Nathaniel Knight-Percival, and a penalty was given. Drinan converted from the spot for a third.

Elliott Nevitt was introduced for Paul Glatzel late on, but Rovers failed to trouble the Orient goalkeeper.

Kieron Morris did find a way past the opposition goalkeeper, but saw his header ruled out for offside.

Smith added his second of the afternoon, and the hosts’ fourth, turning from close range after being found by Kyprianou.

Tranmere team: Doohan, Dacres-Cogley, Knight-Percival, Clarke, O’Connor, MacDonald (McManaman, 56’), Spearing (Foley, 46’), Morris, Hawkes (Watson, 46’), Glatzel (Nevitt, 71’), Maynard (Dieseruvwe, 56’).

Subs not used: Murphy, Feeney, Duffy, Merrie.
