Match Preview: Northampton Town

4 March 2022

It’s a huge clash on the road this weekend as Rovers travel down to Northamptonshire to face 2nd placed Northampton Town in a clash between two sides looking to consolidate their respective places in the automatic promotion spots of Sky Bet League Two.

After a few poor results, Micky Mellon and the squad will be hopeful to see a change in fortunes in front of the travelling SWA at Sixfields and gain what would be a valuable three points.

As for the hosts’, they have only lost one of their last seven games in league action and will be confident as they managed to leapfrog Rovers last time out and now sit a point ahead in the lead-up to this weekend’s clash.

Team News:

No new injury concerns to note for Rovers. Glatzel nearing a return after being back in training whilst Jay Spearing is back running on the grass in a step up to his recovery from a knee injury.

One to Watch: Sam Hoskins

After coming through at Southampton, Sam Hoskins has been at Northampton Town since 2015 and has seen two promotions so far during his stint at Sixfields with a third potentially on the horizon.

After being loaned out several times whilst on the books of the Saints, he joined Yeovil Town on a permanent deal in 2013. But after yet another loan move, the attacking midfielder finally settled at Northampton and has been there ever since.

This campaign is looking promising for the Cobblers with them sitting in second with just 12 games to go, and Hoskins has played an impressive part in this season’s success so far.

With 12 goal contributions in 32 league appearances, he has missed just two league games this campaign and will be hopeful to continue to be the ever-present figure in the Northampton squad for the remainder of the campaign.

Manager: Jon Brady

After being born in Australia, Brady saw the majority of his playing career played in the non-leagues of English football, featuring for clubs such as Hayes, Rushden & Diamonds and Chester City.

He was appointed manager of Brackley Town in March of 2009, a role which lasted six years and saw him become the club’s most successful manager as he won seven trophies and broke many records during the process.

He joined Northampton Town in 2016, originally as a coach in the Under 16’s at Sixfields.

The role furthered when he was promoted in 2017 to the coach of the Under 18’s before being placed in temporary charge of the first team in place of Keith Curle who was sacked in February 2021.

Despite the Cobblers being relegated that season, Brady was given the job on a permanent basis and has Northampton looking like strong candidates for an immediate return to Sky Bet League One with just over a quarter of the season to go ahead of this weekend’s game.
