Match Reports

Sutton United 1-1 Tranmere Rovers

19 March 2022

There was a share of the spoils on Saturday afternoon as Tranmere were held to a point against Sutton United after dominating the large majority of the second-half were they were unlucky not to pick up all three points.

The 1-1 draw sees Rovers drop down to fifth but claw level on points with Northampton Town who occupy the final automatic promotion spot ahead of what is going to be a fascinating end to the Sky Bet League Two season.

Sutton started the first-half the stronger of the two sides, dominating play particularly in the air as Rovers struggled to contain the hosts’ in the air.

And it was Sutton’s arial ability which saw the deadlock broken as Ben Goodlife rose highest from a corner and headed across goal into the far corner to give his side the lead.

The home side continued to pressure whilst Rovers struggled to build momentum in what was a very stop-start encounter for large parts of the first half.

Omar Bugiel had a chance with five minutes of the half to go as he got in behind the Rovers defence and looked to lift the ball over the on-rushing Joe Murphy but the shot stopper spread himself well and made a crucial save.

Rovers did apply a bit of pressure towards the final stages of the first period, Josh Hawkes with a long-range effort which dipped in front of the Sutton keeper who spilled the effort, but the away side couldn’t take advantage.

The visitors continued to dominate with never-ending pressure on the Sutton goal, and after numerous deflected efforts, Tranmere finally got the equaliser on 68 minutes as Hawkes stole in at the back post to slam home and draw Rovers level with just over 20 minutes to go.

Elliot Nevitt had an effort well held by the Sutton keeper as Rovers looked to push for a winner before Ajiboye shot over from near the penalty spot with an opportunity in which he should’ve done better.

Nevitt had another chance right at the death as he received a ball over the top in which he controlled brilliantly but a last-ditch challenge denied the forward to chance to take all three points back up north.

With another long away trip up next for Rovers with an encounter with Colchester United, Micky Mellon will be keen to take the positives out of the second half performance in particular in which Tranmere completely dominated the proceedings at Gander Green Lane.

Tranmere team: Murphy, Dacres-Cogley, Clarke, Davies, MacDonald, Hawkes, O'Connor, Warrington, McPake (Foley 45'), Nevitt, Hemmings
