Match Preview: Northampton Town

5 May 2023

Tranmere Rovers look to finish the season unbeaten in four games this Bank Holiday Monday, as Northampton Town visit the Wirral.

Ian Dawes was named the new Tranmere Rovers Manager earlier this week and will take charge of his first game as the permanent boss at Prenton Park.

This Bank Holiday Monday Season Finale will also be shown live on Sky Sports, with Northampton Town needing three points to gain automatic promotion to League One. Should Rovers draw to or beat Town on Monday afternoon, the visitors will rely on a Stockport County draw or lose to go up.

Town are unbeaten in four games, compared to Tranmere’s unbeaten in three. The last meeting between the two sides was back in December, where it ended a goalless draw at Sixfields Stadium.

One To Watch: Sam Hoskins

Sam Hoskins is a 30-year-old attacking midfielder who is beginning to become a Northampton Town legend, who has been at the club since 2015.

Hoskins progressed through the ranks at Southampton’s Academy throughout the years between 2005, aged 12, and signed his first professional deal in 2011.

He failed to make an appearance for the Saints, with loan spells as a youngster between 2011 and 2013 at three different clubs – Preston North End, Rotherham United and Stevenage.

He signed for Yeovil Town in his first move away from St. Mary’s in 2013, and played 31 times for the Greens, scoring just one goal, including a loan move to Barnet in 2014.

He then made the move to Northampton in 2015, where he has played 295 times for the First Team, scoring 65 goals, becoming a fan favourite at Sixfields.

The Manager: Jon Brady

Jon Brady is an Australian football coach, currently managing Northampton Town in League Two, of whom a win this weekend at Prenton Park would seal them automatic promotion.

He started his footballing career in 1991 when playing for Brentford, and went on to become quite a journeyman in his playing days – playing for Brentford, Swansea City, Wycombe Wanderers, Hayes, Rushden & Diamonds, Woking, Chester City, Stevenage, Hereford, Cambridge, Kidderminster, Kettering and Brackley.

He stayed at Brackley as Player-Manager, a spell which lasted 6 years, two of which following his retirement from being a professional footballer.

He joined Northampton Town as U16 Coach in 2016 and progressed through the ranks at the club, promoted to U18 Coach in 2017.

After Keith Curle was sacked in 2021, Brady was appointed on an interim basis, before being confirmed as First Team Manager for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, however, Brady couldn’t save the side from relegation from League One.

He has done a fantastic job in the hotseat at Town this season, leading them within touching distance of a return to League One.

Across his two management jobs, Brady has managed 430 matches – winning 183 and drawing 110 – meaning a win percentage of 42.6%.
