Match Preview: Sutton United

7 October 2022

It’s back to league action for Rovers who, after three consecutive wins in Sky Bet League Two, face Sutton United on Saturday afternoon.

A trip to Gander Lane follows on from a midweek defeat in cup action as Rovers made multiple changes but fell to a 3-5 defeat to a talented Leeds United Under 21’s.

But with some strong league form heading into the encounter, it’s set up for an interesting clash with Sutton trailing Rovers by just two points in the league standings.

Sutton have lost their last three league games against Salford City, Gillingham and Stevenage respectively and will look to get a first league win since mid-September at the weekend.

Team News:

Tom Davies, Luke Robinson, Charlie Jolley and Joel Mumbongo all remain sidelined.

One to Watch: Will Randall

The 25-year-old winger was a product of Swindon Town’s academy where he spent ten years, two of which were as a professional.

In 2016, he was signed by then Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers but didn’t make a single appearance at Molineux.

After some fairly unsuccessful loan spells, he joined Sutton in 2019 where he is now closing in on 100 appearances. He played a role in the Sutton side which won the National League in 2020/21 and has made a fairly strong start to the League two campaign this year, scoring three goals in his eight appearances so far.

Manager: Matt Gray

Due to various injuries, London-born Gray had a short playing career in non-league after coming through at Tottenham Hotspur and Cardiff City respectively.

During his coaching career, he has been an assistant manager at Eastleigh before stints with League Two clubs, Aldershot Town and Crawley Town and was then appointed as one of the coaches with Sutton in December 2018.

After the departure of Paul Doswell in 2019, Gray stepped up and was appointed manager at the beginning of May and led United to promotion to the football league for the first time in their 123-year history in just his second season in charge.

With a 45% win percentage during his 160 games in charge of the The Us, he’s made Sutton a firm part of the football league furniture with them currently sitting around mid-table in the fourth tier.
