Match Report: Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Swindon Town

23 December 2023

Tranmere Rovers made it four victories from four at home with a 2-1 win over Swindon Town at Prenton Park.

Tom Davies and Jordan Turnbull returned to start in place of Joe Yarney and Jean Belehouan, with Harvey Saunders also coming in up front in place of Kristian Dennis.

There was an early scare for Swindon when a loose backpass had Murphy Mahoney scrambling back to the visiting goal before Rob Apter burst down the right wing in an attempt to take advantage of the panic, but the Robins recovered.

Connor Jennings looked to catch Mahoney off his line with a chip ten minutes in, but the shot was narrowly wide of the mark.

A couple of loose passes at the back put Rovers on the front foot as the first half progressed, Apter cutting in on that left foot to force Mahoney into action.

Tranmere appealed for a penalty 20 minutes into the game when Saunders went down in the box, but the referee waved play on.

Swindon went ahead with their first real chance of the game on 22 minutes when Daniel Kemp burst into the box on the visitors’ right and swept home into the far corner.

Rovers pushed to try and break down a stubborn Swindon defence as we approached the break, Apter cutting inside again trying to find a way through, but the visitors ultimately went into the break ahead.

Tranmere started the second half as they finished the first, pushing for that equaliser, Apter curling a shot over the bar just seconds in.

The equaliser came in the 54th minute, Jennings capitalising on a slip at the back from the visitors before unleashing a shot which Mahoney palmed into the path of Kieron Morris who duly put us back on level terms.

Swindon came again, Charlie Austin heading at goal almost immediately after the equaliser, but Luke McGee saved well.

Josh Hawkes entered the action for Saunders on the hour mark and was straight into the action, curling a ball towards the far corner which was saved well by Mahoney.

Hawkes was at it again just moments later - Hendry played in the winger who beat his man to cut inside and curl another effort at goal which Mahoney saved down low.

Rovers continued to pepper Mahoney’s goal with chances, the ‘keeper saving low from another Apter effort as we passed the hour mark before Brad Walker went close to a first Tranmere goal with a long-range effort.

Tranmere went ahead through a Tom Davies goal from the back post on 72 minutes after some intense pressure on the Swindon goal.

Swindon appealed for a penalty with ten minutes to go when the ball struck the hand of Morris, but the referee waved play on once again.

The visitors had the ball in the back of the net five minutes later, but the linesman had already flagged for offside.

Rovers stood firm and took the victory to make it four wins from four at home.
