Match Report: Walsall 1-0 Tranmere Rovers

16 December 2023

Tranmere Rovers were beaten 1-0 at Walsall on Saturday afternoon after a second-half goal from substitute Jamille Matt.

Rovers started the game brightly, putting a few slick passing moves together, one resulting in Kristian Dennis sliding a ball across goal, but the Smith in net for the hosts came to collect.

The hosts grew into the game, Oisin McEntee going close with a header 20 minutes into the contest, but Rovers soaked up the home pressure.

Jean Belehouan, in for the injured Tom Davies, was an important part of soaking up that pressure, making a couple of key clearances in the first period.

Kieron Morris intercepted a loose ball at the back from Walsall five minutes later and played in Dennis in the box, but Smith saved well.

The best chance of the first half fell to Donervon Daniels on the half-hour mark, who blasted wide from close range for the hosts.

Rovers had their best chance soon after when captain for the day Connor Jennings played in Morris, who squared for Rob Apter, before Jennings poked it just wide after anticipating a spill from Smith.

Following decent chances for both sides in the first period, we went into the break all square at 0-0.

Jamille Matt proved a handful after coming off the bench at half-time for the hosts, and forged them ahead on 64 minutes from a through ball.

Tranmere tried to force an equaliser, coming close from a free-kick routine, but Smith was able to deal with it.

Rovers rang the changes as the second half wore on, going close again through Jennings, but couldn’t find a way through.

Despite a late Tranmere onslaught, Walsall took the points with a one-goal victory.
