Match Report: Tranmere Rovers 2-3 Morecambe

13 February 2024

Tranmere Rovers suffered a late 3-2 defeat at the hands of Morecambe, having held a 2-0 lead inside ten minutes.

Rob Apter tapped home a square ball from Harvey Saunders to open the scoring before Connor Jennings fired in his tenth of the season, from the spot after Saunders was tripped.

Morecambe were soon back in it when Charlie Brown fired into the top corner and levelled the scores ten minutes from time through substitute Jordan Slew.

Then, the Shrimps secured maximum points as Jacob Davenport curled a 25-yard free kick into the top corner in added time.

Rovers got off to the perfect start on just four minutes, when Saunders robbed Morecambe captain Jacob Bedeau of the ball and sped forward, squaring for Apter to tap home his seventh of the season.

Tranmere’s joy soon doubled, as did the lead. Connor Wood played an inch-perfect through ball into Saunders who was tripped, earning the hosts a penalty. Jennings stepped up and smashed the ball down the middle beyond Archie Mair.

However, Morecambe were still well in this game and pulled a goal back in 14th minute. Julian Larsson’s effort deflected into the feet of Brown, who fired powerfully into the far corner. Three goals in the early exchanges.

The visitors went searching for a quick equaliser and Luke McGee had to be alert to gather Gerard Garner’s first-time effort on the volley, inside the box. Larsson’s curling effort dipped over a few minutes later.

Regan Hendry and Kieron Morris picked up yellow cards as Morecambe continued to dominate the ball. Joseph Adams attempted a run into the box but was denied by an excellent tackle from Lee O’Connor as he shaped to shoot. The Shrimps midfielder then fired in two efforts from the edge which were blocked, before picking up a yellow card for hauling down Apter on the counter.

Apter was lively down the right flank and, just before the break, attempted a cross towards the back post which turned into a chance, dropping just over the bar of Mair’s goal.

Bedeau headed just wide from a corner five minutes into the second half, as the away side continued to search for a leveller.

Down the other end, Rovers were pushing more to extend their lead. Apter saw a volley blocked before Saunders fired over a few moments later.

Nelson Khumbeni found his way into the book for tripping Hendry as Tranmere looked to form a counter. The hosts got the chance to build another attack, started by Hendry in his own half and ending with the Scot side-footing into the arms of Mair.

Morecambe lost the ball in midfield and O’Connor collected, finding Apter with an outstanding through ball. The Rovers winger raced into the box but couldn’t beat Mair with his low effort one-on-one.

The Shrimps were starting to look a little clumsy in possession, with Tranmere able to pounce on loose passes. More chances came as a result, Hendry saw a shot blocked before Apter forced Mair into a low stop from the edge of the box.

Joel Senior sent in a free kick which needed just a slight touch goalwards to level the scores, but his delivery somehow evaded everyone in the penalty area. Slew then forced a strong save out of McGee from close range.

However, the Morecambe substitute levelled the scores in the 82nd minute, smashing into the roof of the net from Senior’s cross from the right.

Jennings tried his luck from range late on, striking just wide of the far post with stoppage time nearing. At the other end, Senior found the gloves of McGee with a low drive as both sides looked for a winner.

That winner came, courtesy of a Davenport free kick which flew into the top corner from 25-yards. Late heartbreak for Rovers, as visitors Morecambe walked away with the points.
