Match Report: Sutton United 1-1 Tranmere Rovers

18 November 2023

Tranmere Rovers drew 1-1 with Sutton United after a late equaliser cancelled out Rovers’ first-half opener.

After enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the opening minutes, Tranmere had the first chance of the game ten minutes in when Tom Davies played a long ball over the Sutton defence for Connor Jennings to touch down into the path of Kristian Dennis. The striker shot at goal but saw his effort saved by Dean Bouzanis.

Rovers took the lead 17 minutes into the game when Rob Apter’s ball across goal was deflected into the back of the net.

Sutton responded well, going close with a couple of headers from Harry Smith and then Aiden O’Brien, but both were wide of the mark.

Tranmere had the best chances of the first half, though, Apter often causing Sutton problems on the Rovers right, and it was his goal which took the men in white into the lead at the break.

Aiden O'Brien struck at goal from the edge of the box for the hosts early in the second half but Davies took the sting out of the shot and deflected it into the hands of McGee.

Rovers had to soak up extended spells of pressure leading up towards the hour mark, Sutton sending long throw after long throw into the box, but the defence stood firm.

Apter tried a curling effort from the edge of the box shortly after the hour, but it curled just too far wide.

Chances were few and far between in the second half, but with three minutes to go, Sutton equalised through Louis John from a corner.

Despite a late push, Rovers had to settle for a point in the end.
