Preview: Crewe Alexandra

15 November 2018

Setting the scene….

Tranmere Rovers return to League Two action with a trip to Gresty Road for an away fixture at Crewe Alexandra.

Micky Mellon’s fourth-placed Rovers head to Crewe off the back of a 3-3 draw against Oxford City at Prenton Park in the FA Cup last Saturday, with James Norwood’s late equaliser forcing a replay this coming Tuesday.

Having won their last two league games, Tranmere will be hopeful of maintaining their impressive form at the home of the Alex

David Artell’s Crewe are 18th in the division and will be hoping to secure their second victory over Rovers this season following their Checkatrade Trophy win at Prenton Park.

Team news

Cole Stockton is back in training following a lay off through injury. Liam Ridehalgh is also back within the first team set up, featuring in the Cheshire Senior Cup on Wednesday night.

The Railwaymen’s season so far

From their 17 matches in League Two so far this season, the Railwaymen have attained 19 points, collecting five wins to their name, but having lost their last four in all competitions, they will be aiming to get back on track.

Triumphs against Morecambe, Macclesfield Town, Swindon Town, Stevenage and Grimsby Town see Crewe eight points ahead of the bottom two leading into this weekend's match.

One to watch

Striker Jordan Bowery is the man who the Tranmere defence will need to keep an eye on this Saturday.

The Nottingham-born player began his career in the youth ranks at Derby County and Chesterfield, turning professional with the latter in 2008.

Over four years with the Spireites, Bowery featured 83 times which included a brief loan stay at Non-League Barrow before he signed for then-Premier League side Aston Villa in August 2012.

Making 19 appearances for the Villa Park club, he moved to Rotherham United in August 2014 for an undisclosed fee having spent time in South Yorkshire with Doncaster Rovers earlier that year.

Netting five goals in 40 league appearances for the Millers, he left Rotherham in January 2016 after a loan stay at Bradford City.

Stints at Oxford United and Leyton Orient followed before he signed for Crewe permanently in May 2017 following a loan at Gresty Road.

The 27-year-old has since made 62 appearances for Artell’s side and leads their goal scoring charts with six this term.
