Report: Chorley 0 Tranmere 1

24 July 2018

It was victory at Victory Park for Rovers as a Connor Jennings goal in the second half was enough for a 1-0 win.

It was a slow start to the game by both sides. The first chance coming in the 7th minute as Tollitt set up Harris on the edge of the box and his thunderous strike was met by the Chorley goalkeeper with a flying save.

Minutes later, Chorley had their first bit of action in the Rovers half. Louis Almond forced a good stop by new loan signing Shamal George before McNulty cleared the danger.

On the 14th minute, a quick Chorley counter attack resulted in the striker squeezing a shot underneath George from the edge of the box however Ellis was round well to cover his team mate on the line.

Rovers’ main source of joy was coming down the left through Ben Tollitt. His mazy run into the box was cut short by the defender just as he was about to release the trigger.

Approaching half time, Cole had the final chance of the half. He got onto the end of a deflected far post cross and attempted a shot on the half volley only to see it blocked by the defender at the near post. Claims for handball were waved away by the referee.

Tranmere made an array of substitutions at half time including winger Jonny Smith. Smith looked lively from the off and wasted no time in beating his man and cutting back to Jennings inside the box, his low shot was well blocked by the defender.

Substitute goalkeeper Paddy Wharton was called into action on the 66th minute as a fierce shot came in from the edge of the box which he managed to get finger tips to and divert it for a corner.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 69th minute. Smith, again, drove into the opposition half and cleverly picked out Jennings inside the box in acres of space. He calmly slotted past the keeper to put Rovers ahead

Chorley were still posing a threat up front as they pumped crosses into the Tranmere box, the final cross resulting in a header that just grazed the bar.

Following that Chorley pressure, Rovers took back control. Firstly, Mullin laid the ball off to Banks who tested the keeper down to his right hand side and then when Tollitt did eventually beat the keeper by rounding him, there was a covering defender on the line to deny him his goal.

That would be the last action of the game as Rovers left with the win and a hard earned clean sheet.

George (Wharton 61), Caprice (Devine 46) McNulty (Sutton 46), Ellis, Monthe (Spellman 46), Cole (Smith 46), Harris (Norburn 30), Gilmour (Banks 61), Tollitt, Norwood (Mullin 46) Trialist (Jennings 46)
