Former Rovers Stars Feature In Charity Match On Saturday

16 May 2018

Footballers from Wirral Radio FC will take on the mighty Tranmere Rovers Legends including ex-Premier League players to raise funds for Wirral Hospice St Johns.

Wirral Radio FC will play top footballers past and present including Cole Stockton, Andy Robinson, Kenny Irons, Ian Moore, Dave Higgins, Gareth Roberts and Ged Brannan, who will be coached by former Tranmere Rovers manager, Ronnie Moore.

Special guests will also be playing for the Tranmere Rovers Legends, such as ex-Liverpool midfielder David Thompson, Welsh Premier League player Danny Holmes and boxer Sean ‘Masher' Dodd.

The game, organised by Wirral Radio FC, will raise important funds for the hospice which could potentially pay for 20 bereavement support sessions for families and up to 150 hours work for a specialist palliative care nurse.

Former Tranmere Rovers legend, Dave Higgins said: “We're looking forward to raising as much money as we can for the Hospice, and I know that the lads are looking forward to getting back out on the pitch. It's an amazing cause and the funds we raise can be vital in helping people who unfortunately have to use the Hospice.

“It'll be fantastic to be back on the pitch again with some of my former players, too. It would be great if people come down and gave us their support, even if football isn't really their thing, a donation could make a real difference.

“Every penny counts and can help them to make a real difference to the specialist care they provide for their patients and their loved ones. They can only continue to do this with the help of the community and others.”

The Hospice provides care for patients with life-limiting illnesses including cancer, heart, liver and kidney disease, respiratory and neurological conditions.

Head of fundraising for the Hospice, Teresa Nightingale, said: “It is absolutely brilliant that Wirral Radio and the Tranmere legends are showing their appreciation for the great work that goes on at the Hospice by influencing others to donate and support us so we can help even more people in the future.

”We are very grateful to the Club, the players and fans for this fabulous boost to our Hospice and for making a difference to the people that we take care of. We're delighted they chose our cause and we hope that people join us on the day to not only donate, but to watch a fantastic occasion.”

If you would like to support the teams, the match kicks off at 5:30pm on Saturday 19th May at Cammell Lairds FC. Tickets are £5 at the gate or you can purchase yours at wirralhospice.org/match. There will also be an opportunity to meet the legends at the post-match party from 7:30pm in St Annes club, Rock Ferry, with a £2 donation to Wirral Hospice St John's required on entry. To raise further funds there will also be a raffle, auction, live music and refreshments. You can find more information at Facebook.com/WirralRadioFC.
