Match Report: Shrewsbury Town

9 October 2018

Rovers fell to a 6-0 defeat at the hands of League One side Shrewsbury Town in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night.

Micky Mellon made ten changes from the starting team that faced Morecambe at the weekend.

Tranmere started the game the brightest of the two teams as Larnell Cole went one-on-one with Shrews stopper Steve Arnold who denied the forward smartly down to his left.

Shrewsbury then took control of the game and broke the deadlock on 11 minutes through Lenell John-Lewis. The striker swivelled on the spot and fired past Wharton from 18 yards.

Just six minutes later, Shrewsbury doubled their lead. After neat play down the left by Haynes, he cut back to Docherty who placed his shot beyond Wharton and into the top corner.

A third goal in only 11 minutes for Salop came via defender Omar Beckles. Wharton kept the ball out from a free kick at his near post however Beckles was on hand to tap into an empty net from a matter of two yards.

Rovers tightened up for the remainder of the half but still trailed 3-0 at the break.

Tranmere started the second half, similarly to the first half, on the front foot. However, a stray Gilmour pass on the edge of his own box was collected by Okenabirhie who took on Mark Ellis and slid the ball past Wharton and into the bottom left corner to make it four.

In an attempt to restore some parity, Mottley-Henry drove at the Shrewsbury back line and whistled a shot just past the left hand post.

Shrewsbury weren't to be denied a fifth as Okenabirhie grabbed his second of the game, curling a shot into the right hand corner of Wharton's goal who got fingertips to the effort on 74 minutes.

Okenhabirhie got his hat trick and Shrewsbury's sixth in added time as he volleyed into the top corner from 12 yards out to condemn Rovers to a 6-0 defeat in the Checktrade Trophy.
