Micky's Newport reaction

22 September 2018

Manager Micky Mellon was left a frustrated figure after Tranmere lost their first home game back in the EFL.

Rovers fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat, with the goal conceded early on courtesy of Fraser Franks’ fifth minute goal to seal the win for Newport County.

After the game, Mellon said: “It was a very frustrating afternoon, to concede a goal so early from a second phase free kick is obviously something every team wants to try and avoid.

“There are teams up and down the country that lose goals from second phase free kicks but it is something you believe you shouldn’t do.

“To lose the goal as early as that created a bit of frustration. We never got into our rhythm and we allowed ourselves to be man marked all over the pitch and our movement wasn’t what it usually is.

“When we did get the ball into the forward areas, we were not imaginative enough and we didn’t do much of the stuff that we worked on last Thursday and Friday.

“It was that type of the day. Newport defended their 18-yard box very well and they were aggressive in terms of getting to the first headers.

“We have to be more aggressive when the ball is going in there, we need to show more optimism, better movement and attack the key areas when the crosses are coming in.”
