Higgins can't wait for Friday's game at Prenton Park!

17 April 2019

Tranmere Rovers favourite Dave Higgins has urged the SWA to “Pack the Park” when Micky Mellon’s side host Forest Green Rovers at Prenton Park on Good Friday as the promotion race from Sky Bet League Two hots up.

Rovers are currently fifth in the division but are just two-points behind Mansfield Town in third, the final automatic position.

Liverpool-born Higgins, 57, who spent two spells at Tranmere from 1983-1985 before a decade stint where he made more than 300 appearances between 1987-1997, now has encouraged the SWA to back Micky and the lads in their promotion push.

Higgins told the Club’s official website: “The crowd spur you on, they get right behind you and they force you over the line. They make a hell of a difference and they need to keep coming, it’s very important.

“We’re battling with big teams in the big stadiums and with big players and that crowd helps to achieve what the Club want to achieve.

“The atmosphere on Saturday was amazing, I can’t wait to go to the game on Friday against Forest Green. We’ve got four games left, two at home, second in the league Bury after that with Lincoln in between.

“When we went down to the Vanarama Conference, we had a good base there like 2,500 season tickets, that was great support. Two-and-a-half-years on, we got more than 8,000 on Saturday and it was the highest league gate this season and for League Two that’s amazing.”

The former defender, a commentator for TRFC Radio, praised the work that boss Mellon and the players have done to get Rovers on the cusp of the top three.

He added: “We’ve had a big squad and everyone that has come in has done well. At the start of the season we played the likes of Exeter and Lincoln, who are going up and will probably end up as champions. We got some great results at home, 10 clean sheets and then we faltered a bit just after Christmas so the whole season has been quite consistent apart from that month.

“The players that he (Mellon) has brought in, the likes of Perkins, have come in and done jobs. It has been a big squad thing, quite consistent and look at where are now it is brilliant, absolutely amazing.”
