TRFC Raising Awareness of Mental Health in Football

25 April 2019

As part of Tranmere Rovers’ continuing partnership with mental health charity, Mind, the Club have created a unique fan challenge to raise awareness of mental health in football.

From the start of the 18/19 season, the EFL and Mind have worked together to improve the nation’s knowledge of mental health through the power of football.  All 72 clubs across the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two pledged to have programmes in place to offer support, workshops information and resources for those in need.

As well as this, the Mind charity logo now appears on every Club kit right beside the player’s name - keeping mental health awareness at the forefront of any team.

On Saturday 27th April, Tranmere face Bury at Prenton Park and during half-time a ‘Mind Games’ fan challenge will take place on the pitch.

The challenge will involve supporters wearing a blindfold and being directed through a set of cones before taking a shot on goal in front of the Kop! Raising awareness of mental health, this challenge will demonstrate that those around us are here to offer support and guidance through dark times.

Mind recently carried out research which showed that more than 50% of football fans said they find it easier to show emotions during a football match than any other time.

Sandra Gilbert, CEO of Wirral Mind said:“We are delighted to be working with TRFC to enhance and improve the way football, sport and society in general approaches mental health. We aim to increase awareness and understanding amongst supporters and staff. We will work to promote our message and services to ensure that people get the support they need when they need it.

Tranmere are very supportive of this partnership and are passionate about making a difference to those closest to us in the local community.”

You can contact Wirral Mind from 9am-5pm every day on 0151 512 2200 or visit: https://www.wirralmind.org.uk/contact-us/ for further information about their services
