For each fixture this season, take a trip down memory lane to recall a memorable Tranmere Rovers match against each of our Sky Bet League One opponents.
Tranmere travel to Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One on Tuesday night, and you can relive one of our victories against the Pirates, which came in the 1989/90 Leyland DAF Cup Final played under the Twin Towers of the old Wembley Stadium!
Goals from Ian Muir and Jim Steel saw the Wirral outfit crowed Leyland DAF Cup winners in May 1990.
Competing in what is now known as the EFL Trophy, Johnny King’s side reached the Final after securing triumphs in previous rounds over Chester City, Rochdale, Bolton Wanderers and Doncaster Rovers.
TRFC went on to secure their title courtesy of strikes from Muir in the ninth minute of the game before Steel’s effort with 71 minutes on the clock, either side of Devon White’s equaliser on 55 minutes for the Gas.
Muir’s right-footed hooked volley which found the bottom left-corner gave Tranmere the perfect start early on before he turned provider for the winner with 19 minutes left, crossing from the right for Steel to head in from on the line.
It was the first of two Wembley Stadium wins in two years, with Rovers returning to the home of English football in 1991 as they beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the Third Division Play-Off Final.
