Micky's United preview and cup draw reaction

4 December 2019

Micky Mellon will field a competitive line-up when Tranmere Rovers host Manchester United U21s at Prenton Park in the Leasing.com Trophy second-round on Wednesday night.

The boss is set to rotate his squad, with Neil Wood bringing his young Red Devils to the Wirral for a 7:45pm kick-off.

Mellon said: “It’s another game for us. We have to be careful with the group that we have as many available for the league game on Saturday, but we will still be putting out a team who will be competitive and do well.

“We’re mindful of who we select tomorrow and we are well prepared for both games.

“We have got to make sure that we have a good quota of players available for selection for all of the games. We will be making sure that we do that.

“The bread and butter is getting the group ready, and then moving onto Saturday.

“We have made sure that we know what we need to know about Manchester United U21s. It will be a tough game for the lads that we put out as we want competitive football.”

Mellon also gave his thoughts on the Emirates FA Cup third-round draw which will see Rovers travel to Premier League outfit Watford for a tie at Vicarage Road in January.

He added: “It’s fantastic to get any Premier League team and to get them away from home is going to be fantastic for the players and for the fans.

“We will look forward to that when the time comes. It is exciting and to be able to give the fans that opportunity, and the players and ourselves. It’s what it is all about and it makes all the fight we have put in worthwhile.”
